I'm probably the fifth person to respond that's not in HR

You need to show whoever you are being interviewed by that you are on top of your game. If you can't even get to the interview on time, then how can they expect you to come to work on time?

^^^^ Showing up late for the interview sets a tone of unreliability and lack of professionalism. One minute late would be okay--not great. Anything more than that, and the points start coming off of your evaluation.

All the excuses you gave are unacceptable. If you realized you were going to be late because of an extreme situation, like a car accident, then I'd expect a phone call.

I missed my first day of work at my very first real job because I was in a car accident on the way. I ended up staying there for five years!

10 years ago i had my first day of work in a hotel in germany. Before i went to work i walked my dog in my new nice dress. My dog stepped in a broken glass and his paw was bleeding a lot! I didn`t wanted him to walk back home so i picked him up on my arm and carried him home, ruined my new dress for work. There was time to bandage his paw but no time for a new dress. When i arrived at the hotel i explained the dirty dress and the manager told me that he ownes a dog too and next time i can be late for 5 minutes to grab a new dress.

Being late for an interview is a no-no, unless there was an unforeseen emergency such as a car accident.

If you are wanting a job, then follow the advice my old drill sergeant gave me years ago....

"If you aren't early, you're late!!"

Exactly..Unless, as mentioned, unless an unforseen emergency occurs.

When I was interviewing, if I was unfamiliar with the employer's office I mapped out the office location (pre-Google Maps :P), and drove it the day before and walked up to the door to verify the travel time, see if there was an unexpected construction zone along the way, etc so that I KNEW I'd be 5 minutes early no matter what.

If I wanted the job, then I figured it was that important.

Its very true that unexpected events occur but you need to do eveything in YOUR control to get there on time. No excuses.

You should do everything possible to get there on time. It's entirely possible that a major accident, snowstorm, public transportation strike, etc. makes you late even though you planned to be there 1 hour before your scheduled time. Then what? If they can't understand such a transgression during extremely unusual circumstances, you probably don't want to be working for them!
