I am amazed that a employer would think someone is still available to work for them after 6 months

~37% of the unemployed have been out of work for more than 6 months.

I know but it must be a job that no one wants because it sounds weird to call someone 6 months after they applied for a job unless it's a federal job.

Aside from my government job, every employer that wanted to interview me always called within 2 weeks after the application was submitted.

they have to pick someone. well usually - of course there are exceptions where positions get canceled, etc. but generally, a few people get called for interviews and one person gets chosen. there's no reason the OP won't sometimes be among those people.

keep in mind that:

1. hiring managers generally have full time jobs to do in addition to hiring. they may have higher priorities right now if there's not an urgent need to fill the job.
2. there may be time factors that are out of the manager's control - they're waiting for an approval, or there's some budget issue, or something else.
3. it's summer and maybe someone crucial to the process is on vacation.

Sad but true.

In the OP's case it is a smaller business so it wouldn't really have the 300 applicants like a McDonald's or Taco Bell would.

Exactly. The issue who is the manager you need to talk to. I can goto a store and ask to speak to a manager about finding a job but unless it is the hiring manager, it is not a slam dunk if I'll get the job or not.
