Times like this either make people weak and wither away or become stronger.

Have you seen a shrink recently, or did someone lend you some of their good "pick-me-ups?"

That's not correct, but you will continue to believe this as it seems to fit your narrative.

What did they have that the rejected candidate didn't?

It could be any number of things. It would be stupid of them to tell you if they don't have a relationship with you.

If you do have a relationship with them, often they do tell you. Most places I've worked use interviews as professional development opportunities with in house candidates. Other places I've applied to externally that I have relationships with give me specific feedback.

If there is no relationship, there should be no details. They would be unwise to provide them.

Well, to use your perspective, I won't be any worse of than I am now...

So "They found someone else that is a better fit for the position" is not the real reason then?

It's the legally correct reason to give, but not the real reason. The problem is the legally correct reason still doesn't tell a candidate why they weren't the right fit.

I don't care if it's a "polite" or more "curt" rejection. Bottom line, I did not get the job. Equally, I have no problem re-applying to the place that had rejected me, whichever form it took, if they have another suitable position, and even asking for help the person who rejected me (if I do not have another contact). It's hard on one's ego and psyche, but if you are unemployed you just have to toughen up until you get a job.

I think if you are an internal candidate and they took time out of your day to interview you, then you should give them a personal response. At that point, you're already colleagues and I feel as though it shows that the company is really trying to help its internal employees to get to where they want to be.

Otherwise, I feel nothing wrong with any form response. A rejection is a rejection no matter how it's stated.
