I requested an transfer at work to our DC office. I like KC, but my wife and I have the freedom to try out some different places, and I got my company's blessing. And we have visited DC twice and really love the area.

DC area is pretty cool. You will like it. You will like the "region" even more. Mountains, Beaches, Bays, Baltimore, Philly, NYC. Fast paced, lots to do, rapidly changing, very progressive and liberal population (if that's your thing).

Cost of living is high, traffic is terrible, but pay is high if you are educated and the traffic is not so bad once you learn the area or if you live near transit.

There is just so much to do and people have things to do other than try to save a crappy airport terminal.

I will always miss KC. I like KC a lot and still follow development there much closer than even here. I was just there for a week again. But I'm not sure I would move back for any reason other than to be closer to family and friends from the area again.

I personally enjoy the more urban and faster pace of life on the east coast.

Base:
We will be staying at the Hilton KC Airport for 2 nights at the start (we have a car) and then the Hilton Phillips (or Presidents) hotel for 2 nights before we head back to STL.

For sure, we want to do the following:
  • visit WW1 museum
  • Shopping at the Crown area (sp?)
  • Sample at least 2 BBQ resturants
  • some kind of outdoor recreational hiking/walking

Any other suggestions???

With the above items, can someone help suggest an itinerary of some sort to maximize our vacation while at the same time making it relaxing and stress-free?

Thanks!
You can do a lot in four days, so you should be able to see most of what you want to see.

WW1 Museum for sure
Union Station (not sure what traveling exhibit will be there)
Jazz Museum
Negro League Baseball Museum
Boulevard Brewery tour
You might see if anything is at the Kauffman Performing Arts Center
The actual City Market will be quiet during the week, but it's still worth a visit
May as well as least walk around Crown Center, check out the mall, the fountains etc
Nelson Art Gallery
Kemper Museum of Modern Art
Truman Home and Library in Independence
Walk around the Country Club Plaza, have dinner there one night at least
Make sure to dine somewhere in the Crossroads District. Lots of places down there, like Freight House which has Jack Stack BBQ
Walk around Westport
Powell Botanical Gardens is a bit of a drive from KC, but it may be worth the drive to you.
Kauffman Gardens near the Plaza is a nice small gardens area to walk around.
Loose Park and Mill Creek Park are good small urban parks to stroll around.
Swope has some good mountain biking trails, so it may have hiking trails as well, I'm not sure
English Landing Park on the riverfront in Parkville is nice.
BBQ? I like urban KC bbq joints like LC's, Bryants, Gates, BBs. I feel those are more authentic to KC. Jack Stack, Q39, etc are good too for more sit down for a dinner type places.

That's all I got for now. Looks like other have given lots of great advice too.

Thanks! We may be buying a house, too. We have to apply and see what happens. Washington and its nutty real estate market!
