I'm right on that one. The report is current. Four decades ago, there were hardly any dairy in the islands compared to WI. There were 20 times more dairy in states like Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin compared to the islands.

Four decades ago, on Maui, if you drove up Baldwin Avenue, and huki'd right at the top in Makawao, you'd drive right by Haleakala dairy cows on your way to Pukalani. Haleakala Dairy produced enough milk for Maui. But you knew that, didn't you. And of course there's more dairy in Wisconsin than Hawaii.

A couple of years ago, when the state was down to 2 working dairies, the then owner of the Big Island dairy asked the state to reclassify some land it was leasing, so it could be used for his operation, and the article about it reported this fact...

Quote:
At its height in the 1970s, Hawaii’s milk dairy industry was operating more than 40 facilities. But with the development of lands for other uses and rising costs associated with running this type of business, the number of dairies began to dramatically decrease. Meadow Gold is the only processor in the state with locations on the Big Island and Oahu.

And since the population of Hawai'i was only 769K in the 1970 census, that was a haleakala lot of dairies for the state's size.

"More dairies than Wisconsin" was a humorous exaggeration, obviously, but it made a serious point. There once was a time when Hawai'i was self-sufficient for fresh milk, but now most of it is brought in from the mainland. If this Kaua'ai dairy works out, a little less will have to be "imported." That's the point.
