I might possibly move to Kauai with a friend after College (which should be about 2014.) My friend and I have thought about how we would afford living on the island and how we would get a job, ect. But we kind of feel like we should just pack up and go and figure out the rest when we get there. We feel like if we don't do it then, we never will. We both like traveling and we want to get the most out of our younger years as possible. Can I get some opinions as to whether or not this is a good or bad idea? Thanks!

As long as you have the money to support yourself while you "find yourself" then the idea is sound.

PS: Also having the money for a return ticket is a must.

I think it's a good idea, to try out a dream while you still can. "Can" meaning while you are without commitments and feeling adventurous. You can easily rebound from setbacks, and you can return to the mainland at any time.

Whether it is a good idea for you as an individual...only you can answer that one. Some people try to escape to another location, only to find they brought along the same problems. Others have an idealistic view of the destination, and are sad or angry when their expectations don't match reality. And of course many are happy to try something new, will adapt their plans as hitches and changes occur, and will be the richer for the experience.

Go for it.

Why Kauai? I always wonder why people decide to move to a certain Hawaiian island. Is it that they visited and get set on moving to where they visited? According to Wikipedia there are 27000 jobs on the island Kauai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I haven't "chosen" Kauai for any particular reason. It was between Kauai and Maui and after reading that Kauai is more laidback and peaceful compared to Maui, Kauai has held my attention.

Love design graphics; that is a great major.

Kauai is more laid back and peaceful then Maui IMO though with the population growth it is appearing more and more crowded yet the people retain the more mellow approach to life for the most part.

I think you'll find that your education will serve you well on Kauai if you decide to come.

Good-luck to you

I think all that means is it's more sparsely populated and rural. It's also a lot rainier, which is why it's the garden isle. You shouldn't decide where to live based on how "laid back" you think it is. Don't mix up tourism and relocation. I guarantee you, life in the most laid back place is going to be stressful when you get there and there is not a single graphic design job and you're living on minimum wage. Pile on the depression from the rain, and all the "laid back" in the world won't make you happy.
