Im going to write how I truly feel about Las Vegas now, no homesickness will be injected into this post

Overall I think Las Vegas is a very good place to live, to set this post on a positive note, I'll point out all the things I like about Las Vegas

-The sunny weather (who could complain about that?)

-The grocery store choices. So much variety here, as opposed to FL which is either Publix or Walmart

-The easy navigation around town. The grid system is great, makes the city very easy to navigate. What has thrown me a few times is that a lot of roads cut off in certain places and continue on somewhere else (ex. Buffalo ending at Washburn Road, continues further north at Deer Springs)

-The beautiful mountains. After a year they still captivate my attention.

-The affordable cost of living. Makes it fairly easy to move here and "make it" if you have a job

-The public parks. I'm impressed with the amount of beautiful parks there are. Sunset, Lone Mountain, and Centennial Hills Parks all come to mind

-The availability of jobs. Its not as hard to find a job here as much as people say (look at how many I've had since moving here)

-The outer suburbs. Anywhere newer in Vegas are the best and most beautiful neighborhoods. Summerlin, CH, and Aliante being my faves

-The variety of radio stations

-The casinos, always great to place a bet here or there, then have dinner and then catch a movie all in one place Red Rock is my favorite

-The higher education system. At least when it comes to CSN, I've heard nothing but good things

Now for the Cons of Vegas

-The economy is too dependent on tourism, making LV more susceptible to recession, and is usually hit harder than other cities

-The public ed system. I was never a student in CCSD but if what I hear is true (like the 41% grad rate in HS) than they need to fix things fast

-The traffic congestion. If its not an accident, its road construction, and if its not that its the interminably long red lights (Flamingo and Maryland)

-Beggars, prostitutes, drunkards, addicts and other general dregs of society, every city has them, but the population of them seems much higher here than other places

-The taxi drivers. Just as bad as the ones in New York

-The poverty rate here. I know its most likely because of the economy, but its really sad. I see so many single mothers pushing strollers, and so many food stamps and wic users when Im in line at Vons

-The ghetto neighborhoods. There's so many of them out here, it seems like you have to live on the outer suburbs in order to live in a good safe neighborhood. (always remember to look for good neighborhoods north of Craig, West of Rainbow, or south of Russell)

-The job market. Even though I listed Jobs as a pro, its a double edged sword. The problem isnt finding a job, the problem is finding a stable one that pays enough, or finding 2 PT jobs that are willing to be flexible with your schedule

That gives me a total of 11 pros and 8 cons IMO

I'm sort of surprised to see you like our parks.

What's so great about them compared to other cities.

Today is good day for Davie. Tomorrow, the cons might outweigh the pros and he'll be moving back to Orlando. It's all subject to change with him.

I'm glad that the OP made this list of pro's and con's about Vegas. And being from FL I can relate to some of it, but I think he has made this list before. My advice to him is, make the same pro/con list for Orlando if he hasn't done so already and see what is different or the same about there and LV.

Florida and Las Vegas have alot in common, even if they are on different sides of the country. Most cities in FL rely on tourists. Mostly in Orlando, where the OP is from people go to the theme parks, that is there bread and butter. Down in South FL where I'm from we need people to go to the beaches, shop in the malls and enjoy themselves here. We have a plus down here because we get a boost from being a port city and getting cruise ship tourists.

We have no state income tax, like Nevada. I think Nevada's school system is better then FL, because you guys don't force your children to focus and take a statewide test in middle and high school years. You can focus on the real subjects, and not a test.

FL and LV both have wonderful weather, with LV winning in the sunshine department.

These are just a few of the things I think about when I make my choice of Vegas as a place to live, it's not like I'm moving away from FL, its like I'm going to FL in the desert. (Plus, if your homesick, it will go away cause you are going to be a very popular relative in your family )

Just my .02 and good luck to the OP from one Floridian to another.

Good list.

I especially agree we need(desperately) more jobs that pay a living wage. And almost everything connected with tourism is low pay. That's everywhere, not just Vegas.

I disagree with your comment on LV taxi drivers being as bad as NYC taxi drivers. I lived in NY for 50 years and rarely heard of a taxi being in an accident there. Ive been here in Vegas fo six years and I must see at least one accident involving a taxi at least once a month!

One in five New York City car accidents involves a taxi cab which equates to more than 13,000 taxi accidents there per year. I would hate to see a literal situation depicting your take on "bad".

It is also interesting that the top 9 Google results for "New York taxi cab accidents" are New York law firms that have purchased Google adwords relating to taxi cab accidents (not a random coincidence).
