It's very simple. If you receive good service from someone, tip them well. If you receive no service or poor service from someone, don't tip them. Anyone who tells you it should be based on how much you won/lost, or that you should auto-tip probably gives horrific service. This applies to all professions, IMO, and LV is no different. There is no such thing as an "automatic tip" and I'm sick of people thinking there is. Vegas has gotten really bad about this in the last 10 years.

I'm an ex-local of LV, but one time I was back there on a trip a few years back. The drink lady came by my blackjack table, and asked if we wanted drinks. We did, and she brought them back a little bit later. In most circumstances I ALWAYS tip immediately if the attendant is friendly and prompt, and usually $1 or $2 per beer, or $5 for a cocktail. I was in the middle of a $100 hand, and she sat behind me clearing her throat for a few minutes, and then finally asked me where her tip was. She didn't f*cking get one. She walked away in a huff. The casino was Treasure Island, and I'll never play there again now. All because this old hag wanted her $1 tip so much that she bugged me in the middle of a $100 hand (that I lost btw, and was even more pissed).

People wonder why the service in Vegas has gone downhill lately, its because of stuff like people tipping people out who don't deserve it, and those employees then think "well, they're going to tip me either way, why should i give good service?"

I'm a slot attendant in Vegas. We work for and depend on our tips just like any other tipped position, food server, cocktails, bartenders, dealers. We do so much work that you never see. To you it might be just paying a jackpot (which by the way, our jobs depend on getting it right every time. One mistake, one bad day could get us fired). We try to keep your area clean, make sure your machine is functioning, give you change, cash your tickets, get your cigarettes, find a host if you want a comp, etc etc etc. We work very hard, on our feet all day every day. And we try to do it all with a smile and a friendly greeting. It breaks my heart to see people's comments here that we do nothing to deserve your respect or tips. Every one of us has some sort of physical disability from years on the job, walking ten miles or more a day, carrying a 12 lb belt, lifting heavy machine doors to get the ripped up crinkled dollar bill you tried to stuff into the bill validator. We have bad feet, bad backs, hips and knees, and don't get me started on breathing in your second hand smoke or dealing with obnoxious drunks and no...we don't think you're funny. And yes, if we could find another job most of us would. Our jobs pay our mortgage and put gas in our cars just like yours does. Yes, tipping is optional. No, not everyone tips. But we appreciate it more than you know. More than that, we appreciate your kindness and understanding if it takes a minute or two to get to you when we're busy. A smile goes a long way for everyone.

IIRC, the main think attendants got tipped for was hand paid jackpots. With ticket in/out, does that happen any more. I would think the player would just (and indeed have to) take the ticket to either a cash dispenser machine or the cage. Note, I'm not a big, or even small, slot player, so I don't interface with this a lot.

Thank you for the first person account. I learned quite a bit from your post. I personally do not play slot machines, but if I did, you convinced me to tip. I wish you & your feet & your back the very best.

most big wins still are hand pays so the slot person will payout the win some machines a few hundred requires a hand pay others maybe more

You don't need to provide your actual social security card as long as you know your number.

I'm not so sure about the appreciation part. I won a large jackpot 2 months ago. When I went into that little booth where the supervisor was counting the cash out for me, I tipped him $300. Plus, I tipped the 3 change people that came over and were hovering around me $100 each. So that's $600.00 that I almost felt obligated to pay to people I don't really know, for them just 'doing their job'. The supervisor seemed a little annoyed I didn't give him more. But geez, I thought I was being very generous. Noone gives me a dime when I go home broke... but I always tip when I win, and it just never feels appreciated.

Then you need to play somewhere else or don;t tip if you don't feel appreciated!

So sad to hear about poor customer service.

Old thread but I am still here. I play mostly at Emerald Island and I have hit a few handpays there. And I still tip. They know me and I get excellent service all the time. I don't go to Main Street much anymore because of the parking fiasco!

This was at the Orleans, I've been playing there 20 years. I really only talk to my host, and dont get chit-chatty with any employees, except the occasional 'hi'. I have a few cocktail waitress friends I tip because they work harder, and get stiffed the most. Plus, they are the ones who tell me about the casino staff badmouthing cheap tipping customers.
