My neighbor has a pomegranate tree with a branch that is loaded with fruit that is hanging on my side of the wall... I have been eyeing those lovelies since we moved into this house in July. This morning I plucked one, and it didn't come off easily, so it must be too early... and when I cut it open the seeds were all white not red! When is it pomegranate picking time in Vegas?

When a pomegranate's skin starts getting "tight" it'll begin to crack, slightly exposing those juicy seeds. Watch the feathered folks start worrying those splits wider and wider trying to get to those juicy seeds...they love 'em. My home on the east side (89110) has had a bush for 20 years now...

My mother in law has MONSTER pomegranate bushes. We usually harvest late fall. There's always some pom jelly or jam on the table for Thanksgiving.

I think I've come up with the easiest method of breaking them down -- remove the seeds and then buzz them up in a food processor fitted with a plastic blade. Remove the juice and then place what's left in a pot of simmering water and let it cook for a few minutes.

Pour THAT juice through a colander. I actually prefer the "second runnings" to the straight juice. It's light and refreshing.

Seeds go in the compost pile after they've been simmered. They're done at that point.

I carbonate my juice. That would make a nice tequila drink -- Tres Generations and carbonated pom.
