I would agree that the strip is probably for young singles but the neighborhoods outside of the strip is for families just like any other cities. Plenty of "corky" stuff to do with the kids at the parks alone. And if the parks get boring or too hot then you can look on here.

well we go to santa fe to bowl...i did enjoy that the movie theater was across the street before they closed that and moved into the hotel...we do alot of things that arent in a casino..but now that my boys are teenagers and pre teen age..i worried about the high schools and middle schools...(horrible) elementary is still good...and plus living in the cent hills area makes me feel like im in AZ lol...im a native i loved vegas when it was small growing up here was a blast in those days ...now not so much.. my kids missed out on how vegas USED to be. I will never say i hate vegas its home...but its not for me anymore once my kids are grown and gone ill come back and really enjoy it..cause i dont have to worry about schools, what they see daily.

Is that why you turned out so bad?

If they hadn't ever legalized gaming in Nevada, this is what Las Vegas would look like.

I understand what you are saying about your kids and their education. I agree. But, as far as things changing from when you grew up, you could be describing a lot of places. It's all relative and everything changes. Most parents feel the way you do. We all wish that our kids could experience things the way they USED to be. My parents probably felt the same way.

Good luck with everything!! I will be heading to LV full-time when my daughter graduates in June, so I do understand!

The Hoover Dam is the single biggest factor on why Las Vegas exists. The men came, and they built, and if their off-time needed women and gambling, which was not allowed in the camp (Boulder City) that was set up for them to live during the construction. Without The Hoover Dam, they'd be no need for a Las Vegas.

Hardly! We'd now resemble Phoenix or Tucson!

as a 27 yo male who moved here from gnu yawk 2.5yrs ago, I would agree that living in Vegas definitely has pros and cons most of which have been mentioned...I'll just add a bunch of general thoughts in hopes it helps someone who might consider moving here....I think vegas is the ultimate "whatever you want it to be city"....You can live in green valley and play golf, go out to eat, etc like any other warm-weather city, or you can live in a high rise near the strip and go out clubbing all the time, or anything in between...You can make your income pretty much any way possible, and nobody judges you or looks at you funny, it's a very accepting place..
I moved here to play poker for a living when the economy got terrible in nyc, and though financially im doing well here, I'm mixed on staying in Vegas long term and whether it's worth it, because of social and other reasons....I love that I can make a decent living, live in a nice condo way cheaper than most big citiies, weather is warm all the time for the most part but summers are oppressive...Because I have to play graveyard shift, its very hard for normal social activities (softball league, pickup basketball, hiking, or anything to meet people, is meetup good?) ...Also not easy to meet quality women without any baggage...Most "normal" college educated girls settle in NYC, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, SF, LA etc somewhere with normal good paying jobs and a broad economy...vegas attracts beautiful girls to be strippers, cocktail waitresses, club hosts, etc....Many people also have hustles, Ive never seen so many club promoters and such than here...It seems most people you meet do not last that long here so its tough to maintain friendships, and you see a lot of drug/gambling problems ruin people...I have lived in e.flamingo/95 area, rhodes ranch, sky lofts....disclaimer: im on the strip 5-6x a week for 'work' though live in las vegas country club...used to hang out on the strip for fun when i wasnt playing, but now rarely go as got very sick of it after a while... gets annoying to always be around tourists and slot machines...even the locals here love to gamble their paychecks away which is why theres gvr, red rock, suncoast and a zillion other places though those happen to be very nice places to hang out...
I can see older retirees liking it here, for those people its great...My neighborhood is gated, but outside the gates on karen ave is a drug and hooker haven, and maryland parkway isnt great either, I moved here to be close to the strip since i have to be close for work...Summerlins great if youre older and want to play golf and live a relaxing life without going to the strip much or have to work there, for someone younger it is not the best....There are so many bankruptcy lawyers, pawn shops, bail bondsman, etc in vegas, but its kind of funny and you get used to it....
lastly....for people wanting to move here, Its definitely a fun and unique place to live, but just consider a lot of overall things in your decision...Most people move here far away from family and friends, and that can get lonely, I have felt lonely in Vegas a lot but thats partially up to each individual, you definitely have to be proactive here...and if you have a gambling or drinking problem, do not come here because it can ruin you...Of course if you work 9a-5p (some people must do this in vegas just not people ive met) then vegas is just like any other city...but if you want to do that, most other places would be better to live...vegas is vegas because you can hang out at night and live whatever life you choose without being judged or bothered...
sorry for rambling so long..

Pros

all you can eat sushi places
buffetts
everything open 24 hours
hiking/skiing/road trips all within a few hours
low cost of living and no state income tax
no traffic
high end dining if you can afford it
Lot of cute tourist girls if you want one night stands

Cons
hard to meet quality people if you dont work at an office
hot summers
fair amount of crime, lot of shady people looking for angles (real estate people, plumbers/contractors etc) and club promoting business etc
no ocean nearby
low wages for most professional careers (doesnt affect me, or i would look elsewhere for a job such as IT)

Hot summers a con? That's why I am moving there for! Also, no ocean nearby? I'm in Iowa now, so Las Vegas is closer to the ocean that I am at the moment!

But, seriously, I appreciate your honest post.

Like Ella, I also came out here for the Pro's you mentioned.
Every place has the "cons" Las vegas doesn't hold a exclusive to them

But I found that a place is what you make of it, you seek negativity and it finds you.
If you are open and friendly, other open and friendly people meet you.
I have met all my neighbors, got a job, had great people work on my house
and I am not even THERE yet (full time)

Open yourself to opportunity, and it will come knocking

Jonathan
