Is there real life outside the strip, and what kind of life is it?
Thanks for all opinions.

No need for a life outside of this.

Are you kidding Von?
No need for life off the strip?
You gotta get off that strip and see the rest of it.
I love it.

In the words of Jerry Garcia:
"Don't tell me this town ain't got no heart. You just gotta poke around."

I live off the strip so I see the "rest of it" all the time. I just like messing with people.

Of course there's a life. Not a normal life that one may be used to...but a life, no less.

My situation is different than most. Family matters forced me to move here. I used to live in Key West.

This was the view from our place:

But, my wife and I saved and saved for 15 years, and we were NEVER going to be able to afford to buy a house there. When we left, the cheapest place available was 600 square feet, on 800 square feet of land, and it was close to $1 million. Oh, and the property was condemned.

Milk was $5/gallon, most groceries (aside from seafood and tropical fruit, which are essentially free) were similarly expensive. So were utilities. Electricity was almost four times what we pay here. But, no crime to speak of. And it's a small town with 6,000 permanent residents -- and I knew each and every one of them. And I could go diving whenever I felt like it. Even in the winter, all I needed was a 3mm wetsuit. The water is ALWAYS warmer than the Pacific. And in the summer, it was like bath water, even 100 feet down.

Here, the quality of life isn't nearly as good. But the cost of living is less than one-quarter what it was in the Keys. My wife and I make more, and spend a lot less. So, I guess it's a wash.

The lack of an ocean is the real deal-breaker for me. But eventually we'll move someplace closer to an ocean. But it won't be Key West. We complain about "being underwater." But Key West will likely really be underwater in 80 years or so. And the hurricanes get more frequent and stronger every year.

Life outside the Strip is like life outside of downtown Virginia St. Except what we lack in winter sports we make for in other things, and we have more of it down here because it's a bigger city. Most Las Vegans only visit the Strip now and then unless they work there. It's like asking what is life like outside of the steelmill, or the car factory, or the coal mine. Do people really think all we do is gamble and go to shows?

BTW: Las Vegas has become a paradise for good restaurants. I've been hoping to find a good restaurant in Reno since I lived there in the 70's. On the other hand (are five fingers) ...on the other hand, Reno has mo' better scenery, and IMO, more invigorating weather. Although we have plenty of great scenery too, but there is a slight difference.

Yes, I have a magnetic pull towards the ocean as well. I'm quite aware that Vegas is only but another stop along the road of life. That being said, it doesn't mean I don't enjoy each stop.

I can see why you miss that!

Not a normal life off the Strip? Are you daft? Las Vegas and the giant sprawling valley away from the Strip has normal homes, normal people doing what every single person in every town and city in the world are doing. People live in homes, condo's, townhomes, apartments, mobile homes, some are homeless. Most people work for a living. And there are plenty of jobs outside the Strip. Normal jobs. People go to the store to buy dinner. They go out to eat. Pizza is delivered. The kids go to school. Plus plenty of private schools. College's. Universities. There are churches of every type. Museums, libraries, gas stations, banks, bookstores, coffee shops, fast food, slow food, farmers markets, and everything else every city and town in the world has. You make it sound like all the women are showgirls or strippers and all the men are dealers. You probably think that people don't really live in homes or apartments and they all live in the hotels on the Strip. Las Vegas and the surrounding area is the same as everywhere else. We just have a lot of casino's, which makes it a little more interesting than Podunk, Iowa or upstate New York.

And to the OP, Why is Las Vegas my home? Because it is where I happen to be for the time being. We originally relocated here for work from southern Utah after the job fizzled out there. And going back to California was not an option. We have been here long enough to know most of the city and never get lost. Plus it's home.
