Also, my spouses family lives here (has for a long time), so we also had that. Not to mention they spoke highly of living here compared to the east coast, and other cities where cost of living is more expensive. I guess its easier to hype up a place that you've been majority of your life.

But its really depressing moving here. Unless you have a job lined up, or have connections be prepared to take at least 2-4 months job hunting. For every job opening there are at least 100 applicants. I had a job lined up but my spouse didn't. I've never lived anywhere that has a public transportation system but certain jobs won't hire you unless you have a car. Even though a bus stop is 10 feet away. If you're bilingual, that will help boost up your chances. They cater to the Mexican community here.

Public schools are a joke. a bigger joke than anywhere else.

There is really nothing to do but gamble, see shows if anything good is out, party, swim if youre lucky to have a pool, or walk the strip or Fremont street. WHICH WILL GET OLD FAST. And before any vegas locals jump on here to defend this comment, yes... I've done more than visit the strip. There is nothing social outside of these options. Once you're about 5 miles outside of the fun there is nothing but suburbs, desert, mountains, and fast food joints.

Drivers are retarted. You are guaranteed a fender bender at most within your first year living here.

Unless you like burgers and Mexican food, cook at home.

Yes, cost of living is cheaper, the weather is nice (OCTOBER THROUGH APRIL), and violent crime is laughable compared to where im from. Unless you sell drugs, do drugs, or just hang around the wrong people you will be fine. Las Vegas can be a good place to live, but it isn't as perfect as the locals make it seem. You will not escape your problems moving here. Unless you have family or friends already, you will be lonely. There is no culture here, its a tourist hot spot for a reason. Just as many people move in as they move out.

My conclusion? Think before you move here. chances are you'll be packing it up within 5 yrs anyway.
this is the truth for you but everyone is different. I'd have to ask, how many times have you moved from where you are from?

I have lived in TX, CA, IL, WI, MN, FL .... several cities in CA, TX and IL

Las Vegas is the first place I'm thinking about buying, perhaps because I had low expectations I've enjoyed it here more than I thought I would.

However, being that I have lived alone and way from my family/friends for many years I do not have the same problems starting over that most people will when they go somewhere new and especially different for the first time.

It's important to know the difference between what you are missing at home and what you are missing internally in order to make it somewhere new because I guarantee you will have the same general feelings anywhere you go if you are especially attached to your home and go anyplace new.

Personally, when it comes to Vegas I think its especially important what locality you choose to live and if you have a job and what your hobbies and interests are. I noticed you said there is nothing to do.... I live near Red Rock, after work I'm there almost every day. I love the outdoors. I don't know another place I can easily visit several national parks in a weekend and have hiking and climbing opportunities during the week like we do.

Others mentioned weekend trips to "get away" from Vegas. Actually that is also a huge bonus -- not because I hate it here but I love to travel and Vegas has cheap flights to lots of places I want to go and is drivable to many places in the southwest I want to visit. I've lived in the middle of TX, its hard to get out of....

being able to catch a cheap flight or drive some place cool some people wait a whole lifetime to see (i.e. the grand canyon, zion) is a pretty big perk.

broaden your horizons. I have no idea why people are bored and looking for some institution to make them happy. If you don't like casinos go do something else indoors...or outdoors.

there is a large number of d-bags here but if you pay attention to where to live they are relatively easy to avoid.

My island was off the coast of Puerto Rico. Some coral, but not a ton. But the dives were still amazing!

It had one of the best bioluminescent bays in the world, so night swimming was great, too.

But it rained a lot and the humidity was intense.

I haven't read all the posts. Who needs to? Same crap from the same posters - on both sides. What is this, the 20th, 30th, 40th thread of the same garbage? A person of responsibility should collect them all into one big circle-jerk and pin it to the top of the forum.

Nope, I actually agreed with Scoop that it was nice to live in the place in the picture. That is a variation of our normal rabble rousing

It's also heavily color enhanced. Not that I wouldn't rather live there in a heartbeat.

There are thousands and thousands of such views. Most lack little things like fresh water.

You really up to living where there is no fresh water?

Yeah, just a smidge over-saturated. But there were certainly days where I lived that were close to that. It was beautiful, that's for sure. Except the days like in the picture were overshadowed by the 90% humidity and the afternoon rains. For those of us who prefer arid over wet, it can be a deal breaker.
