Reading your posts remind me of myself prior to moving to Vegas. I had just moved to Los Angeles and ended up receiving an offer here, I thought "cheaper rent, tons of entertainment" but the fun really stopped there. I live in a highrise on the Strip because the city has no developed ways of transportation for residents of Summerlin or Henderson (the safer areas) to enjoy the "fun" the city is built around without drinking and driving or spending $100+ on cab fare (Uber is in the works, but has been banned for the past year).

Las Vegas is great in the fact that the traffic is minimal, rent is cheap, the city hosts an abundance of concerts, and shopping is nearly endless (no Bloomingdales or J.Crew). Parking is 100x easier in Vegas than LA too, but Vegas is not LA. The majority of the population is uneducated, there is quite a bit of crime (especially near the Strip), and there are slot machines everywhere you turn (even in grocery stores).

My advice? Try it, but don't let the bright lights fool you!

I visited Los Angeles last weekend. While the city has some serious problems*, they have stores and restaurants that simply would not survive in Las Vegas.

I was in a used book store in the Downtown area and just marveled at the number of patrons the store enjoyed. We don't see that kind of commercial density except on Black Friday. And we never, ever, ever see that kind of commercial density at a used bookstore.

I wouldn't open any kind of business in Las Vegas that didn't involve a combination of cigarettes, topless women, cheap alcohol and fried food.

* The parts of the city I visited smelled like bong resin and urine -- 24 hours a day. What's up with that? Is there something in the dope that makes Los Angelenos incontinent?

I spent 7 years in Las Vegas. I started my career there and got a great footing in the industry I work in. It was a fantastic place to learn the business and make some contacts. Yes, it gets old. The casinos, the homeless, traffic, tourists, whatever.. All the pitfalls you hear about Las Vegas are true. If you are not a driven and disciplined person it can be a rough town. It's a lot tighter knit and connected than you would think.

I still recommend Vegas for anyone who wants to go, see, live, work, and just do! The place was ripe when I moved there back in 2002. It was boomtown then. Perhaps it is again? Im not sure whats going on there now. Ive been back for a couple trade shows and it a little quieter than I remembered, but not a ghost town by any means.

I moved away during the recession back into the arms of the East Coast where I got to take a better job with the same company I was working for in Vegas. The East Coast office needed sales people and the Vegas office was laying people off. After 7 years, I chose to go back home.

I still fondly remember it and I come back to this forum often. My sister and I both moved back east after so many years in the valley. We love remembering and talking about some of the times we had in Vegas. One of the main things we both always comment on is how beautiful the backdrop is each day when you leave your home. The sky is just so huge and the mountains are absolutely wonderful to see each day. Especially in the winter when they are snow covered. The air is so dehumidified and crisp during the cooler months. I miss how active I was when I lived there. I used to mountain bike, boating on Lake Mead, snowboarding and hiking in Mount Charleston. I used to do that stuff all the time. Here in Jersey/NYC I mainly work. Im not sure if its a difference now in my age or where I live, but life was a lot more laid back in Vegas. There is a saying, "people out west work to live, people on the east coast live to work". Its just a different lifestyle out west. Hard to explain. I miss it sometimes.

Im not sure how young or old you are, but if you are young and just starting off in your career give Vegas a shot. If its a good job offer and you think its good for you, then great. I believe that people can be happy living almost anywhere if their life is in harmony. Career, relationships, ETC... it all comes into play. Location is usually the least important thing. Vegas is certainly the most unique place I have ever lived. I recommend it now looking back on things. I think people from the East Coast have a tough time as they are used to small and tight little neighborhoods where people know each other and you can walk to the local store and such. To some, thats not important. If your are young and a good job opportunity then go for it! Vegas can be a beautiful place if you have a good head on your shoulders. I know a lot of happy people there.

PS... never had a problem drinking the tap water in Las Vegas. Its fine.

1. It took a while for me, but I finally find this city to be terribly boring…but, I was in LA for a year, and I think that did the trick. We have great place to eat, great entertainment, but the culture here is so self centered and out of control. Driving in this city is painful, because we have so many narcissists out there, who don't give a ****. Its painful. Even going to the gym is painful, because people are annoying, always looking at themselves in the mirror, etc. But, maybe this BS is happening all over the country, as the narcissists are taking over.

2. Those that are considering moves to Vegas, are very foolish to at least not spend a week in LA County, Pasadena or the Beach communities in Southern California. The weather in LA is probably the best in the world. And, I don't want to hear about the smog, that is such BS. Dam, my power bill was so low in LA because the weather was so great. No four seasons is the only drawback.

3. Back to Vegas. Those that want to work in casinos are terrible foolish, because the casino jobs today are not that great, unless you are a cocktail waitress that is not afraid to work and get hit on, OR enjoy parking cars, or serving people all day…and these were once great paying jobs when the cost of living here was decent. Today, the COL is out of whack a bit, and the casinos are corporate, so they don't have to pay their people very well.

Ramble over. This town isn't too bad, and Henderson is the best place to live, anywhere near Sunset Station or Green Valley Ranch...
I live in the Los Angeles area and it is super expensive, the electric bills in the summer are astronomical... And you can literally see the brown stripe across the landscape.... Not sure what part of Los Angeles you lived in....

Also the drivers here are worse and getting worse everyday.....

AND we do so have 4 seasons..They are - Fire, Flood, Earthquake and Drought......

I'd pass on living in Las Vegas, the town has no class, people are ruthless and it's all money driven. I thought LA was bad, it's a paradise compaird to life in that hell hole.

I love the tap water and sort of think that people who can't drink it are wimps who will be the first to die in the zombie apoc.

I mean seriously, listen to yourselves.

Keep in mind most of Vegans once lived in LA. However as a frequent LA visitor I would live here over LA. LA is nice to visit once in a while not a place I would want to live.
