Default Almost 55 and Vegas here we come...

I have to agree with JJAMESON. We live in a great community about 35 miles SW of Chicago. My brother and sister live close by and my dad lives in Indiana. The winters here are killing me; literally...and I'm really not "old" yet.
I have a great job and a great house; but pay all those outrageous taxes for the "privilege" of living here. I went to see Wicked with the wife and daughter last Sunday. Cost me $300.00 for tickets and $17.00 to park. We ate before going because prices are outrageous. At the Ford Theater, a bottle of water goes for eight bucks! So, why Vegas? Well, the wife has gazillions of relatives out there including her parents. I've been to Vegas on a number of occasions and love the desert as opposed to flat prarie land with snow drifts.
Yeah; it gets to over 120 degrees out there....well; I've been stationed in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in the 80's so I know desert living. But in comparison, Vegas has BEER! And women not all drabbed in black. But most of all, close proximity to the coast, mountains, moderate short winters, low taxes, cheap entertainment, cheap housing....sure, there are some bad points but I haven't found the "perfect" location in all my world travels. Most of all, Vegas is somewhere you go to live; not to die.
I want to enjoy my twilight years; not spend them couped up at home wondering if were going to be able to afford this months gas bill. So, the pilgrimage of us "old folks" continues....

Nahhh...I might just be a less-tenured senior. Turned 50 last year...now an official card-holding member of AARP. Odd thing, though...and probably same for you...I just don't think of myself as old. Some days I get reminded with a pain in the back of my neck...but otherwise...I still feel kind of young-minded.

Default Be careful, ladies....

Vegas is a great place for females because they can sit at a bar alone, and not be harassed by guys. Because they might just want to play the video poker and have a free drink. Not the same from where I was raised on the East Coast with all my drunken Irish buds. One problem is that many females seem to have a gambling addiction to the damned slot machines-I get hate mail from women all the time, but it is true-71% of people with slot addictions are females-sorry about that girls, but it's true. Ever see the buses at Atlantic City on a Saturday?-all chickies. My beloved former Nun 2 years ago cost me 6G in bill payoffs before I realized she was hopelessly addicted. Yes, men are useless drunken bums with all kinds of violence issues and addictions, but girls-don't move here if you like the slots. We have them in the Super Markets and the Laundromats. 7-11's too. The only places that don't have them are Wal Marts and churches. And the Bankruptcy courts, where you can end up.

My dad is 60 and absolutely loves living in Vegas.

He still works, but in his spare him, he loves to golf and sit out by the pool.
Ever young at heart, he also enjoys the local nightlife (such as catching an outdoor concert at the Red Rock Casino).

I think alot of the "retire to Vegas/Phoenix/Florida" craze was due to the lower cost of living- back when it was extremely lower. People couldn't afford to stay in places like Chicago, NJ, etc., because of the property taxes, housing costs, and general COL, and of course the weather didn't help either.

While LV, PHX, and FL are still less expensive than other places on a relative scale, on an absolute scale, they're not the bargain they once were. Ten years ago you could buy a small place in any of those areas for $150k or less, whereas now you're looking at $250k for the same thing. $100k goes a long way toward living the retired life, so it's not the same "deal" it used to be, and may make folks reconsider if leaving family/friends/what they know is really worth is like it used to be. Of course, what do I know?

Thanks, Pink...I like to think of myself as a 20 year-old, too...but then some small (sometimes big) things remind me. Like I had perfect vision for the first 47 years of my life...but now I need glasses for distance viewing. A little over 2 years ago...my doctor discovered a tumor on my pituitary gland that had to be removed via brain surgery...that was a big one that kind of brought the number into perspective for me!
