Thanks for all the info!

We have had both an upright freezer and an ancient second fridge for the last twelve years. We do defrost the freezer every couple of years...but that is it.

We probably should get rid of the fridge...a 30+ year old antique that was repainted twice. But I like it almost as much as the feral cat and hate to put it out of its misery. Hell in its prime I must have changed the ice maker 10 times. Had a spare all the time. Have to manuever the air flow partitions in the high summer to get it to maintain temperature.

You know I should get rid of that piece of junk...

The heat should not be an issue. With the lower humidity in Las Vegas, you should get no condensation either... HOWEVER... If the garage is NOT heated, you can not put the freezer, or a refrig in the garage if the temp goes below 55 degerees in the winter... The coils will freeze. Hopefully that helps.
I'm sorry - I in no way intended to insult anyone. Note that I did say that I was paranoid. It's interesting to hear that you shouldn't put one in a garage less than 55 degrees. We had about 2 months of -30 this winter (currently living in Canada), and we never had a problem. Maybe it was so cold in the garage we just didn't notice it wasn't working?

Mostly in cold climates you need fear only the defrost cycle. Some of these auto defrost things will decide they are iced up and heat the food in the freezer. Buy a cheap unit and it never happens. And when it gets good and cold the freezer just shuts down and enjoys the season...

I brought a 5 yr old fridge/freezer when we moved down in '98, and it was still in great working order when we left Vegas in '06. 13 yrs old (8 in a hot garage), and we didn't have any problems at all.

I grew up in Mi and now live in Idaho and my garages are not heated I have a freezer and a fridge in my garage and have no problem.
Maybe in Canada or Alaska winter might be a problem?

We have a chest freezer from Costco in our garage in Nor Cal and we've had no problems at all. And yes, being Nor Cal we get 100 degree temps and 32 degree temps.
