A College Degree is not a rare commodity, so it's likely that you have other skills to bring to the table. What sorts of jobs are you being interviewed for?

While the layoffs may effect service workers more than those who are more Professionally oriented, that is still a bad sign. This is especially true in LV, whose economy runs off the gaming/tourism/hospitality industry. If service people are being laid off, it is likely that there is less demand for the work they do (i.e. business is weak).

In some senses, the recession fears maybe exaggerated by the media (esp since it helps Obama), but things are tight. Increased crude oil prices (and the other prices that it raises) along with food inflation are causing a lot of damage. People aren't likely to cut back on basic necessities, but discretionary spending will go down.

My roommate's parents visited this past weekend, and while trying to buy a mattress, the store employee decided he'd "be honest with them" and "tell them how it really is." He informed them that Vegas has its highest rate of unemployment EVER (not true) and that his wife was laid off from MGM a month ago along with 3300 other people, and she's been completely unable to find a job. What he failed to mention was whether or not his wife is actively seeking employment (doubtful) as well as the fact that this information pertains mainly to service workers, and not people with college degrees. Basically her parents totally freaked out, and told her they didn't want her moving here--luckily I have secured four interviews this week and that's making them feel a little better, and she's not coming out until August so if my boyfriend and I have good jobs by then I think they'll calm down.

I've applied for five jobs and gotten interviews for four, within a matter of days.... I'm really not trying very hard, but (I'm sure because of my degree) this has seemed almost too easy. So everyone needs to stop panicking because "there's a recession, I shouldn't buy anything!" and start thinking more "wow I can afford this house because it's cheap." This happened during the Depression--everyone said "the banks won't have enough money!" so everyone went to the bank to get their money and guess what happened? The banks ran out of money. Assess your own individual situation, keep ahead of your credit card debt, carpool or stop driving your hummer, don't get ARMs, and calm down. It'll be okay.

As soon as you start acting like there's a recession, you begin to cause one.
No offense but you do need to come down off your Horse. There is a severe recession here with jobs going south daily. Even UNLV and CCSN layed off 158 high salary jobs today. Casinos are laying off too.

I dont know what you do for a living but it seems it might be one of those jobs that is recession proof......like the medical field. Fantastic for you !! Whatever the case you appear to be bragging to a whole rank and file of workers in many different fields who have joined the unemployment rolls.

You also continue to mention that degree. Like ol bushy the Dictator said about our US Constitution "its just a G-damn useless peice of paper" Do you have any idea how many people with degrees cant find a job? How many have found a job any job like flipping burgers just so they can feed their families?

It's a whole lot worse out there they you care to admit. Again...not picking on you but there are a whole lot of people out there in this economy who are strugging badly and might take what you say and the way you say it not too favorably.

Off the subject a tad but everyone needs to be aware of who or what is arround them. Yes indeed...do not let fear run your life.

Other than that, I spoke with one convenience store clerk when I went to get a bottle of water, and he was telling me that the community spirit in Vegas needs to get back to the way it used to be. In my experience, it wasn't so bad all-in-all....
Community spirit? Not sure what he means. If he meant the way neighbors watch out for their neighbors and get together for block parties and such, that is old timer stuff. Especially in a place like LV where almost no one is from here. In fact most are here less then 10 years. How many of you know anyone past your immediate next door neighbor? Most people keep to themselves and will offer nothing more then a wave if your lucky.

i know (visually) most people on my immediate block (e.g., people aren't shy about waving if you wave to them). i talk to people throughout my neighborhood while i am walking the dogs (admittedly a little less now as it has gotten kinda hot, but the same people are always up in the AM). the dogs are a great conversation starter due to their size, and from there it just continues as neighborly conversation. i have multiple friends w/in several blocks of my house; some who i have met through the dog park, some i have met just by recognizing them on the street and then seeing them elsewhere.

i really think it depends where you live and who you are...most of the people i work w/ don't know the people in their neighborhood, but they will admit they don't really walk around as much as i do. that being said, i am not expecting a block party anytime soon (lost that feeling when i moved away from MKE)

We just had a block party @ West Huntridge last month, GJ. It was awesome. Next time, I'll let you know and you can come.

Found a recent article about the airline flight cutbacks to Vegas:

"US Airways, the second-largest carrier to Las Vegas after Southwest Airlines, said earlier this month that it plans to cut flights to the gambling center by nearly half."

Airline woes cause pain for Las Vegas casinos - USATODAY.com

Less flights combined with rising fuel costs are sure to have an impact on ticket prices. Will this stop people from flying to Vegas? No, but many of them will probably think twice before booking or at least cut back on expenses once they get there.

To offset, the hotels will probably offer some nice room discounts combined with airline deals but what concerns me is how that will affect their bottom line. Many of the higher-end properties (especially the ones just coming online) will probably have to cut overhead in order to maintain these discounts beyond the short-term.

IMHO - This all seems to all come back to the topic of disposable income. Compared to yesterday, for many there is simply less...

No offense..but if these were biblical times, Las Vegas would have suffered the same demise as Sodam and Gomorrah.

No offense taken, but Las Vegas has no more sin than other cities in the world right? They may call it Sin City, but sinners come from everywhere. I guess some places might want to hide the immorality, kinda like SF does, but they are just the same. Its what is in the heart that counts.

AA, you know that I was making light of your post? We no longer live in the times of the First Testament. I am not here to judge anyone. I am only accountable for myself and my own sins.

And if you read the article you would have notice at the end where an analyst suggests there are fixes. Back into the days of the happy LV junkets. Lots of airplanes out there real cheap. Probably even get fuel efficient ones. And you only fly them pretty well full.

Yes unemployment is up. Less than CA or the rust belt. Yes room rates are dropping...but the casinos have a number of mechanisms to handle all that.

Yes Sheldon is cutting price. Good for Sheldon. You drop some on the room rate and make it up partially elsewhere. Minimize the damage.

This place is actually quite good at that. Yes there will be some pain...but meltdowns?

There are a set of folk who just have to put forward awful views...

Any basis? Absolutely not. But it could happen...yes it could and the world could get hit by a meteorite tommorrow and we are all dead in 6 months.

Want to spend your time planning how you will survive seven months? Or perhaps wait until there is significant signs of a meteorite before we panic.

As a final note I believe the monthly gaming take was up a small percentage year over year in may...
