Just got back from the North Rim where I stayed in a cabin inside the park. I called on Wednesday for any cancelations and there was one. The booking agent had previously told be to keep calling for cancellations since alot were happening due to the economy and gas prices.

FYI, sunrise at the south rim can be a very 'Oriental' experience. If you're thinking peace, quietness and sloitude for a proper spritual reflection or perhaps romance...stay completely away from the parking areas overviews. To say it was 'fire drill' would be putting it mildly.

They must not have sunrises in China?????

Yeah, English is seldom spoken in our national parks. The south rim parking lots and gift shops of the big ditch are always packed with busloads of Asian tourists, and on the trails of all the parks everyone speaks German. Americans should get out there and enjoy these incredible wonders. The north rim is mas bonito and gets about 1/10th of the visitors as the south rim.

There are people who run DV in summer. Except for passing through on the way to Mammoth Lakes I've never been there in the summer and wouldn't want to.

While I really wanted to do the train thing, and still do, I followed your advice and attempted to scoop up a cancellation. So hooray for me and mine as 4 more asians are headed to the South Rim to stay at the lovely Yavapai Hotel inside the park, $108 total.

Thanks again for all the advice and help. Just talked to my Mom who is bringing up my cousins and they are all very excited about not having to go for just one day.
