No, we're not that kind of city. Probably not old enough. But there is the Arts District downtown where they have taken old railroad houses (built by the railroad for the workers in early 1900's) from the original town-site, old store front buildings and warehouses, and turned them into galleries, antique shops, restaurants, etc. They hold First Friday every month down there, and it becomes a big street party with the galleries and shops open late, with stages set up in different locations around the neighborhood for entertainment in the streets. It's a lot of fun. The shops are open daily.

Wow, that sounds nice Buzz. I never knew about that. As soon as we get out there permanently, I will put that on my list to do.

Default First Friday

Here's the FF website. Anytime we've gone it's been free, but there may be one area where they charge now. The site isn't too clear on it. Looks like maybe they charge $2.00 now to get into the area just south of Charleston between Main and Casino Center. That's OK, they need it, and $2.00 isn't too much to pay. It says a $10,00 donation to Friends of First Friday gets you in for a year.

The area east of the Stratosphere. Huntridge and Park and through there. Lots of gentrification going on. And some nice houses. Very mixed and tending to somewhere between hip lawyer, Hispanic families and the artistos.

Close to the arts district and livable.

Schools may be difficult for those with children.

A little higher up the porker are the areas across the freeway from there. McNeil and surrounds are somewhat more expensive but well into the mid century modern sort of thing. And from their the Alta Corridor or the Scotch 80s but now you are talking heavy money.

Really into living different? Try around Oakey around Arville and in there. Half acres with concrete block homes built in the 40s,50s,60s. All sorts of stuff for trash to wonderous. And often on the same block.

No money? Try the state streets to the NW of 95 and Decatur. Old mostly concrete block construction with large lots. Heavily Hispanic but mostly owner occupied. Cheap and will eventually gentrify. Too convenient to not make it eventually.

Or reverse the equation and go for the high rise lofts in Downtown. I would think that Soho, Newport and Streamline and the rest will end up a best buy. They did not plan it that way but those things don't sell. Buy REPO. Only bad news is high HOA fees.

Don't waste your time driving around looking for homes. Get a realtor and tell them what you want. They can print a list of all the homes with your requirements in about two minutes. Then let them drive you around and use their gas. That's what they get paid for. Besides, they can open the lock box that holds the house key and let you look inside. They aren't supposed to stear you, but they can give you important info about each area, and they should be able to point out the good and the bad. And you certainly don't expect to submit your own offers do you? You'll need expert advice on that. After all, it doesn't cost you anything.
