Schools may be difficult for those with children.

I live around there, and there are tons of really cute vintage houses that range from bungalows to (basically) mansions.

I have absolutely no idea about the quality of the schools, but it seems like there are a TON! There is a charter school (I think that's what it is) on Oakey, a prep school (private maybe?) on Maryland, and another school on St. Louis, plus Franklin Elementary, maybe more... (Olecapt -do you know anything about those?) If I'm out walking the dog around ~7:30-8 am, there are kids everywhere! Lots of kids seem to walk to school around here.

The Marycrest neighborhood (just south of the Huntridge area) seems to be trying to foster more neighborhood interaction, and there seem to be a good diversity of people that live in there.

You'll find that most of the people on this board and probably most of the people in general like to use school rankings, based on standardized testing scores, to rate whether or not a school is good or bad. Since downtown has a higher percentage of ESL learners and poor kids in general, schools like Franklin and Park will never be able to measure up. I agree with Dr. G that the Huntridge/Marycrest/John S. Park is a wonderful place to live and have a family. I think that there is more of a neighborhood feel here than any of the suburban tracts I've lived in or visited.

As for the original post regarding artsy living, this is also a great place to be - walking distance to First Friday and the wonderful downtown bar scene.

i believe the prep school that you are talking about on Maryland is Eldorado Preparatory, which was Bishop Gorman and is now the campus for Eldorado High School's 9th graders...stupid idea in my opinion, its too far from Eldorado and much closer to other HS's, why not just redistrict the surrounding schools by Eldorado or just develop the location into a 9th grade center for a school that is closer to the "Prep"
