So do I. Are you feeling any better?

I feel fine NLVgal. I had an operation a few weeks ago, and I will have another in two weeks from now. I am hopeful at the end of treatment, I will be able to get back to Las Vegas. Time will tell.

My son is sending me photos, and making me green with envy.......

I suppose sunshine in Vegas every day can be a bit boring at times but it beats the gloominess of Northeastern US weather. Humid cold feels like it goes to the bone.

Yeah, immediate depression set in when I got back to cloudy, rainy, gloomy Portland after a week in Las Vegas. Sure, it was hot, I admit it wasn't always comfortable and I think 107 in early September is unseasonably hot even by Vegas standards. Or so my relatives told me, at least. I was expecting more like mid-90s. I have only been to Vegas once before in September, to pick up a car, and it was around the same time, I think September 7 or 8, and it was really pleasant, like 90 or so.

My relatives love Las Vegas, but even they were getting sick of the heat by the end of the summer. I can totally understand that. Sometimes it's not the day itself, it's the progression of days. In Portland, people come visit, they may not be bothered by 4-5 days of clouds and rain. As a local, it's month after month after month after month, literally 8 in a row, 9 in a row, of mostly cloudy, rainy weather that wears on you. I think Vegas summer is probably the same. For me visiting, I didn't mind the heat for a week, it just meant I would try to avoid walking too long on the Strip, but I'm sure as a local three months into 100+ degree weather it would get... old.

That being said, I personally love to look out my window and see sunshine, and if I was living in Vegas I'd never be walking as much as I did in a week on the Strip. I'd mostly be working inside, relaxing inside, and swimming outside, so I don't think I'd really care all that much. By the time I'd go grocery shopping it would be long dark out and the nights were really awesome! I can say one thing, for me, I don't ever get bored of sun. I could go the rest of my days without ever seeing another cloud or another rain drop and die happy even if I live until 1,000 because of anti-aging technology yet to be developed. I also noticed Vegas is the weirdest (but neatest) form of heat that I've never experienced living in either L.A. or Portland. When it was 100+, I suddenly realized even while walking much of the day, I didn't sweat at all. I mean I'm sure I probably did, but it immediately evaporated or something. If you walk around most places when it's that hot, you are somewhere between drenched in sweat (not me, I don't really sweat much anyway) or sweat on your armpits / chest area. There's certainly some sweatiness going on, let's put it that way. In Vegas even when it's ridiculously hot somehow you can walk around and you're totally dry.

I used to make fun of the locals for saying, "It's a dry heat" when it was so hot outside, but now I am starting to realize they're not joking. It does make a difference!

JonathonB Dry heat - like an oven. No humidity makes a huge difference. About 3 weeks ago it was under 100, very nice till the sun hits your skin. Sun like a laser to me anyway.
Was in Portland early August, loved it. People try to get away from here sometime during July or August.
He's not doing it until next spring.

Ha ha yeah it does feel like an oven when it's 105 or above, I think. The shade feels WAY better than the direct sun. I also realize why locals say they actually like night swimming in the summer. I honestly never thought about that, because in Portland it rarely hits over 95, so we just associate summer heat with swimming in the sun. But feeling the nice warm nights in Vegas, I thought, yeah, I'd actually rather swim at night, probably a lot better for you too -- that direct sun even with a lot of sunscreen may take its toll with such high temperatures. Or at least, you'd probably find yourself putting on sunscreen often just to keep safe. Meanwhile, if it's still 90 at night, it's swimming temperature even without the sun! That's kind of neat.

Early August was fantastic in Portland, that was the only good week we got The rest of the month was still fantastic temperatures, it was a hot August, 90-95, which for us is really warm even for August. But it was so smokey and hazy almost every day after the first week, air conditions reached hazardous levels. I had 3 times in 3 different weeks I had scheduled a day to swim and the air quality wasn't good enough to be outside. The wildfires coming from BC, Southern Oregon, and even California massively impacted the quality of air and it wasn't just the ugliness of the haze but the actual smell of smoke and particulate matter that made it so they recommended nobody do much outside. That's the 2nd August in a row this has happened. I don't ever remember this happening when I was a kid, which is not to say it didn't, but I sure feel like I would have remembered that.

I completely agree with you, my relatives always travel in July or August or both. That's our plan, too. Summer is so great in most places, it's the perfect time to travel and escape the Vegas heat, at least for a bit if you can. I think we'd probably visit family in Portland 10 days or so of July, and I have this stupid timeshare I got suckered into that has most of their locations in Hawaii so kind of considering we'd spend a week in Hawaii some summers maybe in August, or plan an international trip at that time, something like that.

I haven't been to Vegas in almost 10 years. A part of me wonders what it is like to live there, though I understand the long time locals don't go to the strip much. Many people work in the casino industry, needless to say. Perhaps its more exciting to work for a casino even if a person is in the finance and accounting field like myself compared to other areas in the country.

Daily living in Las Vegas isn't much different from living in another metropolitan area with over a million or so residents (LV, NLV, Henderson), except that our grocery stores have slot machines in them.

Other differences are that we have many more world class entertainment options, and a much better high end food scene with more celebrity chef restaurants per capita than anywhere else on the planet.

And many more people will come visit you than if you lived in a non-destination city.

I will never get used to seeing that.
