Alrics...they will be better than my kids school in SC. We live in an area with over 22% unemployment and the schools are just BAD. I am originally am from South Philly so I understand crime and the schooling. The schools there I see at least are trying. Not here. Nothing compares to Philadelphia's 350 murders a year. I just want my kids to be given an opportunity and be and safe, there is nothing ehre for them..

I'm with airics on this one. OP states that schools are the #1 priority, yet wants to move to a place not known for its school system and to a state which provides very low funding for education? OP states that unemployment is 22% in SC, yet wants to move to an area also going through it own unemployment issues (approaching 10%)? OP has medical concerns yet is moving to an area where many travel 200+ miles to LA for good specialist care? OP talks about crime in Philly, yet wants to move to an area that is #1 in certain crime statistics?

It just doesn't add up...kind of like going from the fire to the frying pan, no? Philly-to-LV-to-SC-to-LV? What are you really looking for? I'm not suggesting you stay where you are if its a hellhole...but please put some serious thinking into this next move and try and get it right this time. Trust me, from someone that moved his family around quite a bit while trying to survive depression and find his Utopia to escape to....these moves are not emotionally easy on the kids...and they do come back to bite you (and the kids) in the *** when the kids get older.

I have a girlfriend who moved to SC and she says the same things you do. She hates it there but had to leave LV because her hubby was transferred and they have his retirement coming up next year.

The schools are OK here, you're not going to get a Harvard Education by any means, but your kids will get their standard US education like everyplace else. Because of low funding for schools, you might have to pay for sports equipment, renting of musical instruments, PE uniforms, wood shop supplies, etc., etc.

Choose a decent area of Las Vegas to live and you won't be seeing too much crime. Direct message Olecapt, he can guide you to the nicer areas of the valley.

Medical care is OK here too. You won't be needing to travel 200 miles to see any specialist. Granted, we don't have any fine medical centers like in other parts of the country (Mayo Clinic), UCLA Medical Center, etc., etc., but you ain't got them there in SC either. And most other places in the country don't have those big medical centers nearby either, so don't worry about that.

Crohn's Disease is debilitating, we had a news anchor woman with Crohns Disease (Cathy Ray) and she has since retired from her duties on TV. There are several groups here in Las Vegas dedicated to raising funds/offering support to help Las Vegans stricken with this disease, here's a couple of them:

Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America:

Classical 89.7 KCNV - Nevada Public Radio (http://www.classical897.org/psa/detail.cfm?EventID=2801 - broken link)

Also, our annual Marathon will now have the "half" Marathon as well to benefit Crohn's Disease patients and research to find the cure.

Today Competitor Group announced that online registration has opened for what will be the inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon and Half Marathon powered by Zappos.com to benefit the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. The race, is scheduled for December 6, 2009, and Competitor Group expects that it may draw over 20,000 runners in its first year.

There is quite an awareness of Crohns Disease in Las Vegas and there are many good doctors all over the valley who can treat you.

Good luck in your decision, maybe take a quick trip here to see how much we've grown since you left in 1999 and to go check out your old stomping grounds, to make sure you're OK with all the growth that has occurred.

That is not correct. As you should well know. Perhaps the worst school system in the nation is the best funded.

I still think NV under funds schools badly but that has little impact on the better schools. The performance of those schools is driven by demographics of the local population rather than funding. An example is Utah which funds as badly but does well on its rather uniform demographic.

Funding problems make the poor schools worse. But don't change the better schools much at all.

Philadelphia had 407 homicides in 2007. I don't know where some people get their info, but it is top 10 most dangerous cities. Buffalo, NY isn't far behind. I did not have children when we moved down to SC. I will take my chances in Las Vegas with their crime rate. I don't need to work, I am on Social Security which pays me quite well as I did very good for myself in life. I own my home outright, no mortgage, so the housing is a steal for me now and there are good doctors in the gi field which I need. I don't ever need to drive to California to their "good" hospitals. I lived here 10 years ago and thought the school was better than we had at the time back in Philadelphia. When you come from where I have Las Vegas is perfect...

airics, I don't go by city data. Its crap data. I go by FBI stats. Philadelphia is #10 in violent crime. Las Vegas isn't in the top 50..If you think it's so violent and think the schools suck why not move??

If the schools here are really that much of a concern, there are always private schools. But really, as long as you pick a nice neighborhood, the publics will still provide a good educational environment.

And I agree with olecapt - funding isn't everything.

For example....Nevada ranks 25th in terms of SAT scores (at the middle, NOT the bottom): SAT and ACT Average Scores by States
