If you want only answers you like do not voluntarily post on an anonymous public forum.

If your husband came to this country legally at the age of 4, how is it that he is not a citizen already
at the age of 23?

This post was not originally to talk about my husbands legal status. It was about the fire departments and why each state had different rules as to your legal status. And the answer to your question has already been answered.

These jobs should go to American citizens, and kudos to those states who make citizenship a requirement for eligibility.

Well soon he will be one. He knows more about this country than the country he was born in and is dedicated to being a great fire fighter, helping people and saving lives. He's not one of those illegals that come over here and take advantage of the system. You would never even think he was not from here if you knew him. He's not that typical hispanic.. now his family on the other hand is a different story.

Okay, Fire Departments are goverend by their individual cities, counties or states. There is not one rule for all Fire Departments and some Volunteer Fire Departments have different rules.

Congratulations, he knows as much as any other person knows about any country.
He is actually one of those illegals who is taking advantage of the system.
As far as being a typical hispanic *unlike his family* according to you; there is an old saying that goes:
"The apple does not fall far from the tree".....

Most government jobs required you to be a citizen of America. This is quite normal and it doesn't apply only to the fire department. You can google government jobs and you will find this to be true.
