I am a student from Ireland who will be coming to stay and experience your city for the summer on a J1 Work and Travel Visa. The problem though is that I cannot seem to find a job. I have 5 years experience as a barman, over 2 years experience in IT support and about 20 years experience of farm work but I am having difficulty finding a job for the time I will be over there (mid June until September).
Please let me know if you have any tips for me or anything else or just to say hi...
If your farm work experience includes work with horses, I'd suggest looking into working on one of the many local thoroughbred horse farms. A good many Irish people live in and around Lexington, btw. You might also look into some of the opportunities at the Kentucky (State) Horse Park. Some are closer to unpaid internships than paid employment, but might be of interest to you. Also see if Alltech has anything which might fit - the company was founded by and is owned by Irishman Pierce Lyon.
There are also a couple of Irish pubs in Lexington - perhaps they might offer short-term jobs.
Some of my folks were from County Derry, btw - but they crossed the pond around 1790.
Hope things work out and that you'll enjoy your summer stay in the Bluegrass.
