Hope you get results sooner than I did, although somehow I doubt it. More and more homeowners are paying attention to their assessment amount, in part because of the current declining market value; that swamps the assessor's office over and above their normal workload. The assessor also declines a substantial number of grievances and that decision then requires an appeal in Small Claims Court, which is why I decided to let someone handle it for me; didn't want to have to deal with the appeal's process.
Took two years for me to physically get my $$; but at least I got it

If you don't pay your own taxes, the money may end up being sent to your mortgage servicer and should end up in the lender's escrow account.

if people dont mind me asking.....

1) what were you paying in property taxes and what sort of decrease did you get?
2) Were these grievances based on purchases of homes within the last couple years, where the purchase price and value of the home is lower than it was during the real esate bubble?

The reason I ask is b/c i want to purchase our first home within the next 12 months and I was considering a grievance of taxes based on the lower value of homes now a days. I'm looking for homes in eastern suffolk around the $350-375 range (.6-.75 acre and around 2000 sqf ) and taxes seem to be around $7-8k a year.

Thanks

For me, it was the second time I grieved - first time around the reduction wasn't bad, but not where I felt it should be; now it's getting very close...

I don't know what you mean by "eastern Suffolk" (subject to interpretation ), but on average, the tax amount sounds about right. Of course it depends on the individual house...

Elke Mariotti,

In your post on 1-29-11 you stated:

First time I wanted to grieve, I went to Mark Lewis …….

………Second time I grieved I used someone else, successfully; but I'm getting the money directly - payment doesn't go to them first. Supposedly a check will be coming in February.

But in your post on 6-17-2011, in your reply to me, you state:
……..I also used Property Tax Adjusters (Marsha Held, Elyse's partner) and yes, the refund goes to them; they take out their fee and cut you a check for the balance.

So which is it?????
‘Money direct’ OR 'refund goes to them'.
I would be curious to hear why you were unsure of how the money gets to you. I would hope you are not just advocating for a friend's company.
Or Was Property Tax Adjusters not clear??????

Personally, I still have not gotten my check from Property Tax Adjusters. Don’t get me wrong, I am not fearful, because I know I will get it. And I am not in a need for the money. But it is mine. And I want it.

When I called their office to verify some info on when the check might arrive, I asked to speak to Elyse, but I was put the phone with a person that was quite apparently a ‘newbie’, or more likely a Summer intern. She was polite, but answered every question with, “let me check, please hold on”.

2+2?
Let me check, please hold on.
The answer is 4

Not so confidence inspiring. Lame.

.
Ooops - my bad! I didn't read the contract fully the first time, because we had verbally discussed that the check should go to me ). Apparently I got the "standard" treatment along with everybody else, which is the reason for my post on 6/17. Nothing to do with them--clearly my mistake.

And no, this is not a friend's company - my only relationship with them is on a business level.

Does anyone know how long this process normally take? I get answers that make no sense from the town.

When blue ridge won the grievence from town of brookhaven i got my tax refudn through my bank in 2 months. IF you have a mortgage i think its more dependant on how fast your bank processes it.

Can you please tell me if you got the paperwork from the TOB website, or did you use a grievance company? I am looking on the website as I want to file on my own, but can't seem to find the correct form.

Default Confused

I am confused about the process for tax grieving. I have used Property Tax Consultants for the last few years. They have been successful in getting reductions for upcoming years property assessments.

I have never receieved a refund - only reductions for the next year.

Is it because I grieve taxes for future years that I don't get a refund?

Is being a year ahead costing me the opportunity to grieve and receive a refund for the current year?

Yes, you're always grieving "ahead". The reason some of us received refunds, is because we (or the companies we hired) had to go through the appeals process which went beyond the date on which the next assessment was based.

Example:
I appealed in 2009 for 2010, but the appeal went past the cut-off date in 2010 (for 2011), so I had to pay full taxes for 2010 pending the appeals outcome. The appeal was successful, so a refund check was eventually issued...
