Your mailperson might deliver the wrong mail to you frequently or maybe no mistakes ever and it's not if he skips your house due to 95 degree temperatures, it's the fact that he endures those temperatures and still does a good job. Maybe you need to analyze personal decency. The decent person notices the guy sweating bullets in the tin can that makes a 95 degree day feel like 110, and offers that guy a water. The cheap guy chalks it up as being part of his job. So you tip your barber $15 each time. Is it asking alot to tip the mailman that amount once a year? You need to answer that for yourself.
I already did, and yes I don't make my money by giving it away. I didn't take shots at your personal character, but you can call me the indecent cheap guy, I don't care. I know I'm not. As already stated, when I tip I tip heavy, but it doesn't mean I hand my money out to everyone that I come in contact with. I'm not trying to discourage people from tipping, I'm just standing my ground on whom I tip.

If you tip the cable guy, be careful, he could turn out to be like this.

Im amazed that people chose which line of work to tip. I thought tipping was supposed to go to SOMEONE WHO DID AN EXCELLENT JOB.

I always tip my barber. I dont think Ive ever gotten a haircut so bad that im truly unsatisfied. I've never had a cable guy who didnt do a satisfying job where they didnt deserve a tip.....and being a former cable guy myself, I truly understand how helpful that tip is. There have been times when I went to a customer's house to simply add phone service to their existing service, and because of their bird's nest of phone wiring, Im at the house all day trying to troubleshoot the issue. And no, I never used to get paid per hour like the IN-HOUSE techs. I used to work per job..meaning that if im at your house for 4 hours trying to fix YOUR crappy house wiring, im only making 10 dollars. btw Long Islanders, please clean your dirty house..especially those of you with dogs and cats. Its really a disgrace to be skipping over poo in your living room, bedroom...to install your cable. arrggg

I can't believe this to be true. 4 hours of work for $10? Sorry, you guys make more than that. The 14 y/o kid down the road makes more money than you mowing lawns.

you better believe it. And this wasnt because I didnt know what i was doing. Its simply trouble shooting the issue. Sometimes I would go to a customer's house to do the simple phone service. the system could be working when you got there. As soon as you connect your system and disconnect verizon, suddenly you are getting a constant busy signal. Next thing you know hours gone by with you trouble shooting. Only to find out that the customer had sheet-rocked some phone wires in the wall that werent wired properly. But this is not everyday, but it can be once a week or month

When I left the field, cablevision wanted all the equipments in the house to have a certain signal level. So you would get a job to go in and do a box swap. You arent touching anything in the house. next thing you know, all the equipments in the house had low levels. Could be from water filled underground line. Chewed up lines by squirrels or the customer's lines had never been updated since 1985...anything. Well cablevision wanted you to fix all those issues...possibly run all lines to all 6 televisions in the house or else we wont get paid.

Atleast these were the issues i dealt with 5 years ago. I dont know what its like now. all I knew was the retention rate was horrible then and most left to do other things or work for time warner/dish/direct tv. And I know for sure cablevision will not do away with contractors because they will not absorb the cost to pay a tech per hour to work. Just imagine the cost plus wait time to customers to get their stuff installed.

I do understand why many customers dont like contractors in their homes to do any work because some do work for the money. Some did the bare minimum or below just so they can make a living. i know because I became a supervisor and had to go fix these issues and deal with disgruntled customers.

Yet you don't bat an eye about tipping the person at Starbucks for making you a $6 cup of coffee. Those of you who cry about the cable guy being late don't seem to understand that if all of you would stop making the cable guys do all the extra work at your house (EX. moving your stuff out of the way that was already supposed to be moved so that he could have access to work, stop asking for additional outlets to be installed that you didn't order, stop asking the cable guy to set up your computer, set up your wireless router, and most importantly quite asking stupid questions about how to work the tv its your tv you figure it out.) These are the main reasons for the cable guy being late to your home to install your service. Trust me the cable guys don't make the kind of money you all seem to think, the average starting wage for a cable tech who is starting out is $9 - 10 an hour, this is for an in house employee but most of the techs that come to your house are independent contractors who have to pay for their own gas, their own insurance and on top of that they have to take money out of their paychecks to cover their taxes becuase this is not taken out by the company so they are probably making less depending on the job since they get paid for the work they do.

A tip a sign of appreciation for those of you who do not understand, it is not about paying someones wages. Honestly if you think giving a guy a 5 spot of even $10 is going to change either of your lives you are mistaken, it is a pat on the back or another way of saying thank you for providing me with excellent service. Treat it as if you would a waiter who provided you with service if they do a good job you give them a little extra, if they do a poor job you don't leave them anything. This is to be expected. You want to cry becuase you got a nasty looking install and your service went out 2 days after the install, maybe you should have treated the person who came to your home with a little respect!!! I am not saying that if you don't tip your service will suck, but if they did take a shortcut and you slide them a tip they would be more willing to run back around and make sure that it does not cause you any problems in the near future.

no tipping makes me an angry person

to those of you who understand where I am coming from and do try to at the very least be pleasant when I am in your home.

And for God sakes clean up your nasty ass house before we come over and work on your porn filled computer becuase you are saying that you have a slow connection, it is your computer!! Stop looking at porn and go wash your dishes that have been piled up in the corner of your kitchen and now has green stuff growing on them. And another thing, clean up your dog and cat **** when it is in the house. So tired of seeing a now white turd laying in your floor and your baby with no clothes on is crawling around it and about to play with it because you are too lazy to grab a toy for them, and while you are at it go wipe that babys nose their snot is dried to their face. Have some self respect people.
WWHHAATT???

You actually saw this?

Please tell me not more than once.

I am a generous tipper when it's called for -- a waiter is making below minimum wage and counts on tips to make most of his/her salary. I will make sure I provide an above average tip to a waiter. But a cable guy? Aren't they unionized employees? I've never been in a situation where I had cable installed actually but I am under the impression they are already well-compensated?
