I know, I really think most of us have a mind set or just convience to get it at the grocers. We buy ours from Costco 4 loafs at a time and freeze it thats about 7-9 day supply.
Slightly OT but goes with bread -- have you tried Kerrygold Irish butter? Some of the local stores are hit or miss carrying it, but if you're at Trader Joes they always have it.
The taste is far superior to anything we have here.
Absolutely agree, we always buy Kerrygold. Many stores sell it nowadays including cheapo places like A&P and KeyFood. They may put it in a different section from the other butters tho.
The US butter commonly available seems to have extra water in it, or flavor-remover or something.
I've seen Vermont Bread Co. products in KK(?) in Ronkonkoma and can be purchased via mail order. I've bought their 10 Grain, Whole Wheat and Cinnamon Raisin breads which were all delicious. No HFCS. They do make a soft white but I never bought it. Some of their products are Vegan friendly.
I also like Vermont bread because it has no HFCS, the soft white and wheat are both good. I also like Arnold Double Fiber for sandwiches and Pepperidge Farm country white, which is great for French toast.
The best baguette is by TomCat, just pop it in the oven for 5 minutes, add some Plugra unsalted butter -- it is delicious.
Little Portions Friary in Mt. Sinai makes bread every Friday. They make white the first friday of every month. First Friday White they call it. They also make cinnamon raisin every week. Other weeks alternate between Pumpernickle and Sesame. You do have to slice it yourself, but it is very good. The monks request a $4.00 donation for each loaf.
Pretty much the only bread I have been buying for the last 6-7 years is Trader Joe's Tuscan Pane - it's stone oven Italian bread. Very good quality for something like $2.50.
