I am moving to New York next year with my wife and two children. Both children will be in elementary school by the time we move. We are trying to find the best combination of easy commute and family friendly that we can because there is no way we want to live in the city at this point. I know this is a common topic in these forums, but I have yet to find one catered to our specific situation:
Annual salary: 160,000
Job location: Times Square (my wife does not work so do not need to factor her in to this)
Home preference: something with 3-4 bedrooms and a yard of some kind; needs to be near great schools
Preferred rent: 2500-3000 (we do not have any idea what is "normal" in the area, but we are paying down substantial student loan debt from law school)
Commute time: hopefully under an hour, as job will include incredibly long hours quite frequently.
I would recommend Syosset, the train station is not crazy, hicksville train is close, you can be secluded from crazy traffic, (which will REALLY **** you off) and you are close to 135 which can take you to the NSP or LIE, also you can get to the syosset rail (approx 1 hour to penn station)
also ... being that hicksville is one of the busiest stops on the LIRR and SYosset is one stop more, if you are ever in the city late you can hop on any train that stops at hicksville, and take a cab to Syosset to retrieve your automobile...or have your wife pick you up.
Easy commute from the Hempstead station. Definitely places that fit your budget there. I would start there or Freeport.
I know you are joking but someone who doesn't know LI wouldn't know that. You should try to be a little more helpful, as you would want and expect from someone if you didn't know the area.
Any of the towns along the Babylon line will serve you fine..Babylon is one of the better RR lines (only Port Washington is better because there is no Jamaica transfer). Lynbrook RVC and Baldwin, Merrick/Bellmore are good too, I would not move any further out than Bellmore because your commute will inch to more than an hour on the LIRR. (If you are looking along the south shore of Nassau). I commuted just west of Freeport on the LIRR to Grand Central, and it was 40 min door to door..w subway, a total of 50 min.
Welcome to LI. Be prepared to join the awful rat race that is commuting and being victim to the LIRR's spotty and costly service.

I don't recommend Baldwin. Remember the OP mentioned he has school age kids. The schools are not good. The OP could do much better elsewhere on the south shore (Merrick, Massapequa, Wantagh, etc.) for a few minutes more of a commute.
With that budget and job location (easy commute via Penn Station as you can walk to your office) you won't have any problems finding a house rental on either the south or north shore in western nassau county.

Did we not just have a discussion about how underrated Baldwin schools are in other thread?
