I just bought a window AC and will get $40 from LIPA when I send in the energy star form.Where does this $40
come from ?I am guessing its from all power bills collected and that does not sit right with me as it is a form of socialism that is not the way things should be JMO
Where else would they get money? They may also be obligated by state and/or federal law to have these programs, which may or may not come with funding. Either way, the ratepayer/taxpayer is funding it.
It is worth it to them to pay out bucks to avoid the huge capital investments it would cost them to add more capacity.
Exactly. In the long run, that $40 paid to you in return for buying a more efficient machine pays the $40 back and then some. The cost (especially on NIMBY-laden LI) to build in more capacity is astronomical. Beginning with pr campaigns, subsequent legal battles, and finally construction and distribution, it is an absurd amount of money. It's also not exclusive to LI. Similar rebates go on all over the country - and I take advantage of them every time I have the chance.
LIPA has more than enough capacity with all the new tie lines to other utilities. The old LILCO plants don't run that much, and two old ones just closed down in June 2011.
Efficient air conditioning units have the largest impact relative to saving on power company energy costs which are passed on to residents. They need to build up capacity for the peak months such as last week when electricity consumption is at the yearly high, that capacity sits dormant the remainder of the year. If the can reduce peak consumption they save money in the end.
long island is mostly lighting and hvac loads. they play havoc with power factor . that creates situations where the utility has to provide large amounts of power that basically go un-tracked in an electric meter .
all the transmission equipment has to be sized to provide an amount of power which a part of is un-metered.
they work that fact into the over all cost of electric.
the other big factor as to why rates are high is unlike other areas of the country that support manufacturing that runs production 24/7 we do not.
from 5:00pm on most of the capacity they need to provide during the day is un-compensated for at night.
