There's a really *unique* and elegant Sears kit Home in Flushing, NY and it was featured in an old 1930 Sears Modern Homes catalog.

The owner's name was Zvanonvec. I have an address, but I'd love to get an updated photo of the house. All I have is this photo from 1930 that was taken by the Zvanovecs.

If someone's interested in snapping a contemporary photo for me, please send me a PM and I can give you the address.

Thanks!!!

On another note, Sears kit homes were ordererd right out of the Sears & Roebuck catalog and came in a 12,000-piece kit, with a 75-page instruction book. Sears promised that a "man of average abilities" could have the house built in 90 days. The kit was complete and came with every single thing you'd need to build it!

Pretty cool.

That doesnt look like any Sears home I ever saw. They usually are not that ornate and I dont think they were made of brick. Bricklaying is a bit much for just a "man with average abilities"

That's part of what makes this so unique!

Many Sears Homes were quite simple, but this one is so fancy! And these kit homes were offered in brick, stone, frame, etc.

The house in Flushing is an authenticated Sears kit home, "The Elmhurst." If you google "Sears Elmhurst" you'll find the original catalog images.

Here's an Elmhurst in Chicago area.

And one in St. Louis:

Trust me on this. These are Sears Homes.

I'm sure of it.

Are you able to get a view of it on Google maps?

I really like the elements of this home.

In case you didn't you might want to put this in the NYC forum might get more help. I was born and raised in Flushing and there were many homes there that look similar to picture you showed. Many of them have been torn down and much larger homes were built on properties there. Have many friends and family there if you post address maybe I can ask them to look at it for you.

Thanks for the many replies.

I just need a photo of the house in Flushing. That's my goal.

If someone's willing to snap a photo for me,, I'll send them the address but I'm not comfortable posting it on a public forum.

Conversely, can anyone recommend a local historical society that might be interested in this info?

This organization may be able to assist you on your quest Greater Astoria Historical Society: Home . I also like the Sears houses and for the projects requiring brick I believe they would provide a purchase list to procure them from a local source.

Thanks, Virginia Yankee (and what an unusual name)!

I have sent queries off to every historical agency I could find in the Flushing area, and you know that not ONE of them has replied?

And in each query, I identified myself as a bona fide author of several books and yet not one response!

You'd think they'd be all over this.

I'll try the Greater Astoria Historical Society and see what they say.
