I found that, on really cold days, the heater runs the same time regardless of whether it's set at 64 or 67. But it takes much longer to bring it back up from a low temp.
Nest tells me that it will take 2 hours to heat the room up from 64 to 70; I've thought about adjusting it higher as you've suggested but in my mind, I think I'm saving more by letting it get down to 64. I'll try it tomorrow and see how long it takes to heat up to 70. Thanks.

Nest is not always accurate, or even close, with their estimates. Mine says it'll take 2 hours, and then gets to temp in 30 minutes.

I have tried about EVERY combination to see how I can lower my oil usage (that's what it's all about for me). This includes leaving it at 67* with the fan continuously on, lowering and raising the temp depending on whether I'm home or sleeping, and only having the heat on for short periods when I'm home, and down to 50 when I'm not. I have found that, for me and my house, lowering it down to 64 when I'm away or sleeping means it'll come on less when it's above freezing outside, and take less time to rebound to 67 even when it's colder out.

When I had it go down to 60, it'd take an hour to get back up to 67! Not only that, everything in the house was cold too- furniture, floors- and these radiated that coldness for a long time until they too warmed up. Not worth it at all. Keeping things warmer means the whole house works to maintain a comfortable temp.

Needless to say, I'm a little obsessed with this!

All the "experts" say you shouldn't set back more than 4 degrees. They say it costs more to get back the original setting.
