Hello - I am planning an early retirement and I am curious about Long Island. I love NYC and know that I can't afford to live there. Can someone recommend a town in Long Island that is safe, around 2 hours to the City, very walkable (to the train and great restaurants, grocery) and housing prices under $500,000? I am also very interested in a community that promotes biking with dedicated bike lanes, hiking and great access to the outdoors. Thanks in advance for your help.
Sayville is a really lovely and charming town. There are plenty of housing options which would be walk-able to Main Street (for shops and cafes) and the LIRR. Not sure about bike lanes, but it's a very family oriented and safe area. They have a lot of events that take place - Fall Festival, Holiday festivals, summer concerts and several other community events. Check out the Sayville Chamber of Commerce website.
Riverhead sounds like it might be a good choice. Plenty of outdoor activities like kayaking, hiking, birding, biking and community events like an awesome farmers market, antique shows, theater shows, art events, etc, it can be walkable depending on the specific location, about 90 min by car to NYC with some traffic and for less than 500k with fairly low taxes you can get something really nice.
Huntington Village area is nice as well as Port Jeff Village areaa
