I'm thinking of leaving Long Island to relocate to Michigan to be closer to my son and his family. I own a co-op on Long Island, so I have a home. For what I paid for my co-op I can buy a house in Michigan if I want. I'm in my early 60's and thinking of taking early retirement and getting a part time job in Michigan. Any advise for me?
That sounds like a nice plan. Depending on where you are, co-ops can be difficult to sell sometimes. I'm not sure why but I have heard that from real estate agents. My brother owned a co-op in hauppauge years ago and it took him a long time to sell it. I guess my only advice is to get a good real estate agent or if you plan on selling it on your own, advertise very well.
I left Colorado to upstate New York- why- a policeman came to my door 6 years ago to tell me my mother had died in a plane crash. My husband and I decided that we needed to be near his family being that mine had parished on the side of the Superstitions in Arizona. My advice is be near family, where ever it maybe! Have fun in Michigan.
Just curious, as I live in Michigan, Ann Arbor even, which is doing the least-bad among the state's metro areas, and I can't find a job myself. Unless you've got a degree in nursing, I really do wish you the best of luck in both selling your Co-op and finding a new job in Michigan! I'm looking to go the other direction - get the heck out of the mitten and maybe to upstate NY!
Go for it. I hope to head off west in a few years.
