The town of brookhaven is one of the only towns actually doing something about illegally rented houses. they even have a website that you can go to see if the house/condo has a rental permit. Drive around the area. I live in Medford next door (barely though) . Its a weird mix of gigantic houses ,regular houses, and some rundown. Its still got decent taxes due to the size of the school district.

Its not a bad place to live. Just make sure you don't mind the drive to work.
