Just came across a cute little house for sale in Bellport, (north of Montauk Hwy, 5 rooms, 3BR, shy 1/4 acre) with incredibly low taxes.
Principal, interest and RE taxes (even for a no money down Vet) less than $1,000 (One Thousand!) p/month! And that's without STAR.
North Bellport is also up there with Hempstead and Wyandanch. It's a great deal, but no deal is worth living in the hood.
I understand what you're saying, but for someone who is paying rent, wouldn't it be preferable to own rather than rent? Not everyone's credit in those areas is shot
And for someone starting out, a small 3-BR house would seem preferable over renting someone else's possible "dump".
My cousin lives in North Bellport North of Sunrise and his community is very nice and well kept.
The house I was referring to is south of Sunrise and north of Montauk Hwy, which doesn't necessarily mean it's not well kept. Long Island is made up of neighborhoods, which are much smaller than Towns or Hamlets.
Hey, not everyone can afford the same neighborhood(s) or for that matter is comfortable in all neighborhoods.
Personally, no matter how small, I'd rather own than rent where I'd be beholden to someone's whim about how much rent I pay, what I can or can't do, and for how long. But that's just me - everybody is entitled to their own opinion
And yes, I know very well there are limitations when you own--IMHO different enough to warrant owning.
Sorry but that is the worse part of Bellport. Period. Go drive around there on a warm day, right behind the Holla Dollar and beauty salon.

Are you talking about this place? If so, seems like a great deal at $800/mo or less even if the home needs some work, but the neighborhood and school district are poopy. That block (Lenox Ave) looks OK, but take a little Google Street View tour of the surrounding area and you'll get the idea. There's a reason why you can find decent-looking homes on the cheap in places like Bellport and the Mastics.
That said, I'm no stranger to living in... questionable neighborhoods, so if I didn't have to worry about sending my kid to that SD, I'd probably jump on this

Wrong! That area is WORSE than Wyandanch and Hempstead!
Not even joking... That area looks like somethin straight out of a Feed The Children commercial
