Hi,

We are a family with 4 and 6 year olds in Forest Hills and trying to decide where to buy a house. We know school district rankings but we would like to know what residents think of the neighborhoods and schools, especially elementary and middle schools. Also, we would like to find out what options we have for 4 year old (pre-K from Sept 2018) to see if it’s better to wait for another year and get free UPK from NYC. (Personally, I would like to move to Long Islanf this year.) Our budget is 600-900k so we know we wouldn’t get a big house in Port Washington and East Williston school districts.

I heard from a couple of people that Carle Place school district was great even though it’s not high in ranking. But I also saw some threads here that being a small community, some people were very nosy. We have that kind of experience in Middle Village and, if Carle Place is like Middle Village, we would like to avoid it. I read Herricks school district is 68% Asian. I don’t know What to make of it. I read in some threads that there were’t many options of pre-k in Port Washington area. I heard from a parent from East Williston that she was no longer happy with their high school (with her 3rd kid.)

Also, my husband commutes to Manhattan (downtown) so commuting time is a factor, too.

To summarize, we would like to know:
*what you think of the neighborhoods in general: Carle Place, East Williston, Herricks, and Port Washington school districts
*how the elementary and middle schools are in the districts
*what our options are for pre-k and after school programs
*how the commute is from each neighborhood

And if you have suggestions to what other neighborhoods we should be looking, please let us know.

Thank you.

I grew up sandwiched between East Williston and Herricks School Districts and bought my own home there and remained there until we retired and relocated. Both Herricks and EW are stellar school districts. My sister lives in EW. EWSD is comprised of EW, a small portion of Mineola, Roslyn Heights and Old Westbury. Herricks is comprised of portions of Albertson, Williston Park, New Hyde Park, Manhasset Hills and New Hyde Park. EW is tiny in comparison with just 3 schools and Herricks has 5. The students in Herricks are over 60% Asian meaning Korean and Chinese and India and Pakistani. The students in EW are mostly white and 23% or so asian.
I have been gone too long (5 years) to answer about the current offerings but I do know the demographics are fairly recent.

I commuted for 30 years to NYC and Brooklyn from the Albertson station which is the one closest to EW and Herricks. The service is not as frequent as from Mineola but then you have to pay to park in Mineola and parking after certain hours can be tough.

Remember every one that comes to CD has different experiences and brings different sets of circumstance into the mix. I will say that if sports are important then Herricks does have a football team and EW does not.

Your concerns about the elementary schools are unwarranted, unless one of your children need special services. There is virtually no difference between the elementary school offerings for all of the neighborhoods you listed above. They are all stellar.

I would suggest looking in the Glen Head, Glenwood Landing, Sea Cliff area, North Shore SD.

Great areas. However...
I commuted on this branch for six months, and do not recommend it. (Oyster Bay Branch)
No matter where in NYC you work, downtown, midtown, etc. you will always have to change in Jamaica--changing trains is not only a royal pain, it just adds another layer for possible delays.

We did cross out the area mentioned because of transfer at Jamaica. As for EW, Herricks, and Carle Place, we figured he could find a way to get to Mineola if the nearest stations would not work out.

Getting there you will need to park in the Intermodal garage. It will cost you $6 per day to park. I commuted as aI said for 30 years and while it is not fun to have to transfer at Jamaica, it could be a worthwhile option if you fine that perfect home.

One of my kids is borderline ADHD. Are there any differences to how these SDs handle special need kids? I read a couple of comments by one person who was pretty upset with Port Washington SD.

I have the impression that LIRR service is going down drastically recently just like NYC subway. I work in Williston Park and hear a lot of complaints from my clients who commute to NYC. Is that really true?

Is there anybody that could tell me about Carle Place? It's such a small school district. That could be good or bad.
