Hi everyone, we are looking to move to long Island (Nassau county) for our 1st home. We have a 20 months old boy and planning to get a second baby as soon as we move to LI. (We currently living in Brooklyn)

The ONLY reason we move to LI is for better school education/district and a good community to raise our children.

We have friends living in Manhasset, Roslyn Heights, Port Washington and we've been looking houses within these 3 areas the price is out of our budget. ( So we need to move on to other affordable areas)

Q: Compare to above schools in Manhasset, Rosalyn Heights, Port Washington Does Herricks school equally good?

So our sales agent suggested New Hyde Park (Herricks SD) to us. I was told Herricks is also a very good district. Is it true? Any of your kids studying in Herricks district?

The house we're interested (Herricks SD) is on Quaker St New Hyde Park. it's only few blocks away from Herricks Rd and there is an H Mart around (williston park location)

Q: I'm not sure if this is a good and safe neighborhood for kids. I am not familiar with Long Island.
I've heard bad things about Mineola area. I searched the map and its only few blocks away from Mineola Blvd.
I am worry, since the house is on Quaker St. It is so close to Mineola will it be difficult to sell in the future? How's the resell value in New Hyde Park?

I am debating now as the listing price is within our budget but it's too close to Mineola area.

Here is my wish list:

1) A good school district & also where our kids will feel comfortable.
2) A decent commute to midtown manhattan by LIRR, preferably under 1 hour.
3) A good community where kids can grow up in good attitude.

If you have any comments you willing share with me please do so. I am very flexible on areas. I'm open to other areas.

Thank you
Confuse Mom

You have no worries. I moved after 50 + years in a neighboring town to Mineola. Herricks is a very good school district, in fact, quite good. Mineola is a fine area also. Don't know what you heard (maybe a shooting, recently in the news) but I can assure you it is a very safe area.

My only word of caution is that Herricks is a very competitive school district and you will need to know how your child will deal in that environment. The district is over 59% asian if that is important to you.

The resale value in Herricks SD is excellent. Mineola is considered a great area for commuters, so the resale is high there, too. I have family in Williston Park and New Hyde Park. It's a very safe area. The SD has an excellent reputation.

I agree, I've never heard of Mineola being unsafe. I think people assume that the small Portuguese population in Mineola = unsafe? But I've seen houses sell in one day in that town.

My bet is on the recent shooting on Second Street or Roslyn Road, which by all accounts that I have read was a targeted shooting.

Thanks! I feel much better now after reading all your messages. My budget is 500k to 550k. I've heard Mineola doesn't have good school district and not suggested to live there. We're asian family and since we don't know anyone living in New Hyde Park so I assume it is not as good as other areas. (Manhasset, RH, PW)

One thing that makes me feel good about is this house is also next to Manhasset Hills so I guess I don't need to worry resale it in the future.

Q: where is the high crime rate area in Long Island? Please advise...

thanks

Trust me, Herricks is an excellent, excellent SD. It ranks just below the other SDs. New Hyde Park has a very large Asian community. It's a very safe neighborhood, surrounded by other safe neighborhoods.

Relax Quaker is a fine block. There is no reason to be on it unless you are a local to the area. It is not a shortcut to another area like Moore Street which runs from Searingtown Rd. - Hillside. Resale in the area has always been excellent due to the school district being so good. There are Korean Markets, H Mart, Sweet Pea nearby.

I think you will be very happy there and don't worry about Mineola. It is a safe area and the school district is not a bad district as you were told.

With a budget of $550k you can't afford port Washington or manhasset. That barely gets you in Herricks.
