Plus if you’re not on sewers there will need to be a septic upgrade, compliant with the new requirements. I don’t think this is a problem in Merrick though.

Sounds like you're doubling the space, so double the tax, sure you need all that space? older couples usually downsize. May make more financial sense for you to buy your parents house, and next door can be remodeled for the parents.
