"A Long Island administrator has been charged with stealing $8.4 million from the private religious school where he worked for more than a decade, using the money to buy five homes on Fire Island, a fleet of luxury and collector vehicles, pay college tuition, and a host of other personal items, according to Suffolk County prosecutors."

How lax were safeguards at this place that no one picked up David Ostrove was skimming off the top for *ten years*.

I mean it's not like this hasn't happened before out on LI, so you'd think at least auditors would have taken a more careful look at the books.

Wait, I take that last bit back, looks like Schechter School of Long Island is only now bringing in outside accounting firm to bring themselves in line with modern practices. Bit like closing barn door after bull is out, but they have to say and do something I suppose.

"In a letter to families about Ostrove’s arrest sent Tuesday, Schechter of Long Island’s leaders say the school is growing and has already moved to prevent other financial abuses — namely, bringing in an outside accounting firm that specializes in schools to “assist us through this transition, ensuring that our changes are effective, systematic, and reflect ‘best practices’ in a digital era.”

Raymond A. Tierney is off to a good start. First few months in office and he's already knocking heads together. Keep em coming, it's like shooting fish in a barrel.

At least this fool bought assets with the $$ the 65 mustang and the 5 homes most likely have increased in value. I doubt 8.5m can be recovered but a good portion should be. I love how his lawyer said he’s not guilty. Can’t wait to see how they spin this. It was an accident he didn’t mean to transfer the funds. He should see the max prison term pay full restitution and if he can’t pay it. They should seize all his assets including his west islip home.

That's ok the register of deeds here skimmed over 1 million dollars in cash and sent her kids to the best private schools.

Her office was accepting cash payments for all kinds of stuff. New person started and said this ain't kosher, blew the whistle on the situation, she was sent on a two week vacation while they did an audit.

This stuff happens when people turn a blind eye which is only going to get worse and worse.

Here's what happened with that:

Laura Riddick, who ran the office from 1997 to 2017, pleaded guilty Friday to six counts of embezzling from the office. Wake County Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway accepted the plea deal that Riddick reached with prosecutors, ordering her to repay $926,000 and serve five to seven years in prison.

Wouldn't they seize the assets immediately, once/if he's found guilty?

Yes, government can seize assets at once, but then owner can also contest which drags things out.

Yes, his west islip home looks like it was purchased before he started stealing $$. If he can’t pay it all back they should seize that also. His wife and kid are homeless, to bad.
