My theory is that Zeldin wasn't run with the intention of actually winning. He would serve as an effective fundraiser, allowing the party to get their message out there. His job was to galvanize voters to show up for down-ballot races and it seems to have worked. Winning the governor's race would have been a bonus, not the expectation.

Behind closed doors Adams was praying he would win.
I think I actually heard him whimper when Zeldin lost.

i agree with RPC324's assessment ... but Zeldin would have done even better on Long Island if he hadn't jumped on the election denier bandwagon early on. Lots of moderate Democrats didn't love Hochul, but still voted against Zeldin because of his stance on the 2020 presidential election. Would they be able to put him over the edge (400,000 votes) ? Probably not, without help from NYC.
I'm pretty sure his stance on abortion didn't help (although he stated he would be powerless to change the existing laws here in NY).
I was surprised Hochul did so well in NYC (except Staten Island of course) with the crime rate there so high though.

I would vote for a turtle with no arms or legs before voting for Hochul.
I mean really, how scary and bad would Zeldin have been? It’s so stupid.
