Hi. I'm a longtime lurker and have gathered a lot of useful information about LI from this forum. My brief background: I spent most of my life in Queens but moved to LI a couple of years ago. I currently work and rent in Mineola but hope to move this summer for my child's benefit. I have a preschooler who attends a special ed program in Mill Neck. She ends up spending about an hour and a half on the bus each way, so I want to move somewhere closer (but affordable!). I don't know how long she will need special ed, so I would like a solid school district that would offer decent services in case we need it. I'm not looking for a "starter" house - don't believe in the idea and I hate moving. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have.

The Half Hollow Hills SD is known for its well established special ed programs. Many people move to the area just because of the services. If you want more info, just send me a DM.

I'm looking for something in the $500's. Would the commute from the HHH district to Mill Neck be feasible?

Since it sounds like you want your child to continue to go to school in Mill Neck, I would recommend Bayville. It's a small waterfront community very close to Mill Neck and they do have a few houses for sale in your price range. The other communities nearby are very expensive OR are a mixture of nice and sketchy areas (Glen Cove for example) and who knows what you might end up with when buying in your price range. As far as I know, Bayville is pretty quiet and a safe place to live. Some streets may flood, so maybe someone who really knows the area can chime in on that. As for whether the school district that serves Bayville (Locust Valley) will fund your child's education at this particular school in Mill Neck under its special ed budget, that is something you will have to find out from them personally.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Bayville

For those who may not be familiar with Bayville:

Bayville is a village (incorporated in 1919) in the northern part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the northeast part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Bayville in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Village of Centre Island; on the south by the Oyster Bay, Mill Neck Creek and the Village of Mill Neck; and, on the west by the Village of Lattingtown and the Hamlet of Locust Valley.

The Village of Bayville has a different border than does the "Bayville, NY 11709" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Bayville, NY 11709" mailing address and not be in the Village of Bayville): places with a "Bayville, NY 11709" mailing address that are not in the Village of Bayville are in the Village of Mill Neck.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): //www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

I agree. Bayville seems to fit the bill.

Isn't Half Hollow Hills in Suffolk County?

Thanks for your input. My daughter has another year at Mill Nek before starting kindergarten. The funding for this comes through the CPSE, so it doesn't matter what school district we are living in. She will then enter kindergarten in our local school district. And since I don't know how long she will need special ed, I am looking for a school district that is great overall but that also provides decent special ed services.

The school district that serves Bayville, Locust Valley, is well regarded. However, I don't know anything about their special ed programs in particular.

Have you checked out this thread for ideas:
