"I understand much of the angst of losing open space but I also think that keeping horses in general is awfully expensive. That has also been a part of its decline in my humble opinion. Owning/keeping horses always struck me as a rather expensive hobby, even decades ago."
It's all what you're into. My husband and I decided to treat ourselves, and went to see a movie last week. We shared a drink, had a snack each, and saw one movie in a room with about 150 others, and spent 37 dollars!
I have a small barn where I board about a dozen horses for other peeps. None of them are anymore than middle class. Through the years(31), I have had several single parents with kids, owning one or even two ponies/horses, as clients. If this is what you want to do, there's always a way!!
It can be no more expensive than other sports/hobbies! How 'bout boats, or hot rods, motorbikes??
Anyway, horses were a huge part of Long Island's history, and it's a shame they are experiencing The Big Squeeze. Long Island has more horses per acre than anyplace else in the US. Did y'all know that?? Some of us small farm owners are still trying to hold on and make a go of it, in a strained economy, on an Island where it costs so much more to bring us our necessities(hay, grain, bedding), and some of us are leaving, only to sell our land to developers, and contributing to the problem of declining open space. Like I said, it's a shame, once it's gone, it's gone.

I didn't, that's pretty amazing. I know the southern tier of Nassau's Gold Coast is still serious horse country and doesn't look to be changing any time soon. Brookville, Muttontown, Old Westbury....I think there are even some ponies in Jericho.
I do remember more of them from when I was younger, though....Route 106 in particular always seemed to have equestrian traffic, have they taken the "HORSE CROSSING" signs down?

I live pretty far out east and we have horse traffic everyday. My brother has a few in Maine, he leases them. Is this true for LI also? A horse lease?
How about Beefsteak Charlies at the mall with the Sangria or the old Ground Round with Snoopy and the peanut shells on the floor?
crooks
I preferred the Lake Grove one!!!I loved the Ground Round,I think the one in Port Jeff Station is the last one around.I always felt guilty throwing the shells on the floor,
