My son has done swim classes at the Y in Huntington and is now at SafTSwim in Commack doing private lessons. The classes at the Y tend to be large - like 18 kids - with one instructor and several assistants. This cut down on the amount of time each child got - a lot of the class was spent sitting on the edge of the pool waiting for an instructor to work with him. Also, after several years of classes, he still could not give up the bubble. He was down to 2 slices, but wouldn't go further, and they would not push him at all. He just turned 6 and I felt like it was time. So far so good with SafTSwim - he now loves jumping in the water and is much more comfortable going under, and is swimming without the bubble(which I knew he could before - it was a confidence thing). I think the Y is good for getting kids used to the water and enjoying it, but I know several others who had the same problem my son did and ended up doing private lessons to get them to the next level.

Sounds like a good idea - use the Y to start off (and save some money) and then proceed to private lessons if necessary.
