I've heard that New York has some of the best drinking water around, but does that apply more to NYC or to Long Island as well? How is our water generally considered? (specific location, Nassau County, Roslyn) Do most residents drink tap water or filtered? Is our water considered "hard" or "soft"?

NYC gets their water from upstate, Long Island gets it from Long Island. I much prefer city water. When I went away to college in Maine, I got used to the tap water there. When I came home on breaks, I would get this awful stomach virus and couldn't explain it. I remember a couple people saying that it may be the tap water and I'm not used to it anymore. I tested it the next school break and I didn't end up getting sick. I've lived in the city for the last couple years and never had a problem with the tap water there. I just moved back to the island, so I'm avoiding the tap water here, lol.

Does anyone know if it could have been the pipes at my former house or something? That was in Smithtown, and now i'm in Levittown. I want to test myself and drink the water again, but not until I get back from my honeymoon at the end of July lol (Don't want to be sick in Greece!).

Most of Long Island water districts get their water from 'aquifers', underground tanks that store fresh water. All long island water districts test their water regularly and publish their reports, so the chance of having problems with tap water here is slim. I also tested my water ( Jericho water district) before buying the house ( part of the inspection). The water tested well within all EPA limits for bacteria, organic and inorganic compounds.

There was a recent scare of some bacteria being found in the city water, but I am not sure how widespread it was.

Probably because it is downwind of New York City. The whole area is toxic. Nice place to visit but if you spend your life there, you'll probably miss out on 5-10 years, thanks to pollutants alone.

I always thought that LI "recycled" their drinking water in towns that have a central sewer system? You know...pump it back to a filtration plant then redistribute it. No?
