mooda, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography:
What people refer to colloquially as "towns" are actually villages and hamlets, which are within actual towns; and, because villages and hamlets are referred to as "towns", then, many times, the error is compounded when actual towns are referred to as "townships".
Also, many colloquially refer to a "downtown business district" in a hamlet as a "village".
You can get a fact sheet for any city, village or hamlet on Long Island by going here American FactFinder and input the name of the city, village or hamlet for "city/town" (leave out the ZIP Code) and New York for "State", and then click "GO".
You'll get a lot of demographic, and some economic, statistics for the city, village or hamlet you selected, and if you click on "Reference map" (it's on the right hand side), you'll get a map.
When you do find an apartment or house that you like, you can find out in which community (city, village or CDP) that apartment or house is actually located, which is oftentimes different from the community named in that place's mailing address, by using the Census Bureau's online address search function. (CDP or Census Designated Place is the Census Bureau equivalent for a hamlet in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.)
And, very importantly, among other things, the Census Bureau's online address search function also indicates in which school district an address is located.
Nassau county is great if you work in the city or the airport. water and sewage are very good.
I lived in Garden City.
Suffolk county is a longer commute, often only well water and a large hole in your front lawn!
I lived in Glen Cove, Babylon and Melville.
I miss Long Island, but I do not miss the taxes or the L I E !!!
It's similar to Northern NJ. Especially Bergen and the ilk. If you lived down the shore or southern/western NJ - not so much.
Don't worry about the schools. People here have convinced themselves that people from everywhere else are dunces to justify the ridiculous school taxes we pay (which go up every year, BTW).
I have friends in Calli, AZ, CO, and even some boondock states and their kids are getting just as good of an education and in many cases their newer school facilities blow ours away.
Long Island has been historically superior because of the kind of people who live here - very educated, and education-minded. BUt the gap between "here" and "there" is closing.
I live in Southwest FL now, but was born, bred and lived on LI for 58 years first. I'm in an area with a lot of Mid Westerners and they certainly ARE NOT like LIers!!! Wow--who knew there'd be such a difference. Not me or I wouldn't be here, ha ha. In general they don't like us NYers if you're ever wondering. I think they think we're all walking around packing knives and guns in our socks, are cheap, and or are trying to sell them something at a rip off price. They surely don't seem to "cotton" to us folks, ha ha. HOWEVER, the people I most "get" and are closest with here in our Mid West/North East melting pot, other than fellow NYers, are from..........yup, OHIO! So maybe the poster will just survive fine on LI after all. I certainly hope so. And, yes, if you can afford the Three Village area of Stony Brook, Setauket, etc. and get involved with the University in any capacity it is somewhat diverse, but probably not all THAT much.
