To the O.P., i agree with what has already been stated. Try to get out of that lease by explaining your situation. You've not moved in yet. Silverlake tends to be a pretty tight rental market so the landlord/owner might be willing to let you out.
There is always a way to get out of a lease ... including paying the penalty that's stated in the lease. There are many other options too.

SalParadise, thanks. I'm hoping that most of it will be non-peak hours, so that's very helpful!

Haha! Bummer! I did the exact same commute for a few months back in 2003. You'll survive. The 110 is the ticket. Riding a motorcycle may halve his travel time during peak hours, if he has the sack to drive between lanes the whole time. But in my experience, the 110 wasn't bad. In fact I once made it from Silverlake to a volleyball tournament in Hermosa Beach on a Sunday morning in 25 minutes.

Also, I don't think Metro is a very good option.

The closest red line (subway) stop to Silverlake is in Los Feliz (Vermont/Sunset) and it would require TWO transfers to get to the end of the Green Line which does not actually go into Manhattan Beach. Basically, you've have to catch a bus at that point (read: a THIRD transfer) to get all the way into M.B.

You know what? It worked out! He got switched to a much closer location.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. We're really happy that we don't have to deal with this commute.
Especially after driving over 3,000 miles just to GET to LA!

My two cents: Yeah, LA traffic is bad... but it's NOTHING compared to Boston or NYC traffic (assuming that's where you're from). If you're used to driving in Boston or NYC, you'll find LA traffic a breeze.

If you're from Connecticut or something like that then, well, I can't help you

Hah, readymade, you guessed correctly. Boston! Traffic here really can be terrible. I always thought LA was worse.

I'm from Boston too. Driving in LA is HEAVEN compared to it!

OK... maybe not heaven... but I MUCH prefer driving here than there.

Whenever someone talks about how horrible the traffic is in LA or how crazy the drivers are... I laugh to myself and assume they've never been to Boston.
