Just got orders to LAAFB and would really appreciate some advice from folks who are familiar with the area. My wife and I would prefer a single family home (with a small yard) vs an apartment. ~1200 sq ft would suit us just fine. Our budget is around $2800/month. We prefer a relaxed community and as short a commute as possible while still living in a good area. No kids so we're not too concerned about schools.

So far we have been considering: El Segundo, Rancho Palos Verdes, Playa del Ray, Torrance, Manhattan, Redondo, and Hermosa beaches. Also, there is base housing off of 25th and Western in San Pedro (as well as at a place called Fort MacArthur) that is an option. Any constructive input is much appreciated.

Forget about the base housing. El Segundo, Hollyglen, Del Aire are all great options with 5 minute commutes. The other beach areas work too, but you'll get more for your money in the above-mentioned areas. RPV will put your commute in the 30-60 min drive time at regular commute hours.

Send me a direct message if you want additional info on these towns.

Any of the cities you mentioned would probably work for you. Manhattan Beach would be a great choice but may not fit your budget. El Segundo would be your shortest commute. It's a nice little town, very safe. I would just stay away from the airport side due to LAX noise and some area are a little stinky due to the Hyperion Plant on the ocean side. Everyone gets a whiff of it now and then, but there are some areas that don't get too much of a scent.

I would not consider the base housing in San Pedro. I had a military neighbor who was transferred to the LAX area and was also offered the base housing. But once they took a look at it, they said forget it. It's not a great area and the commute is much longer.
