I posted earlier about living right in Hollywood, with mixed opinions of the area.

My rental budget is $2K/m. I don't go out regularly. I work and run a lot. It would be cool to have a hipster coffee shop, a gym, and maybe a yuppie grocery nearby. I like that bookstore in Los Feliz, and Venice Beach.

Where would you live if you commuted to Sunset and Highland every day?

Check out Franklin Village (between hollywood and Los Feliz basically) It fits most of the criteria you're looking for and a quick commute to work.
Silverlake/Los Feliz is a good choice as well.

Historic Core Downtown. Commute via redline. Unfortunately 2k is probably low end for anything other than a filing cabinet in DT nowadays

I'd live by Runyon Canyon.

Live where you work!

Yeah you let the non- Hollywood residents get into your head... Oh well.

There's a really great coffee shop at Highland and Sunset called Javista... One of my friends is the barista, and he is probably one if the best I've ever seen. They have pretty good desserts to (from a bakery in Hollywood).

I know the area a tiny bit as I have to go to the office every so often. It is true that I don't think I would pick living there if it weren't for the proximity to my office. I do prefer the more neighborhood-y feeling parts of the city. There is also a not small chance that the office is going to move to Santa Monica or Venice in the next year, to be near other tech companies. I just really don't like driving. I just got a car a year ago after 10 years of not having one. I know that fact means LA in general is a bad choice, but my job is super cool and if I want to move up I need to move out there.
