If not themed bars then what type of bars do you think would work .

The typical generic sports bar or pub concept isn't going to excite too many people in LA .
Most DTLA bars are not themed and IMO the best pub crawl in the city is Downtown.

Anyone ever thought we don't have more bars because there just isn't the demand?

Palisades has no need for a bar. Most everyone is old boring and family oriented, with or without kids. not many young people who like to go out for drinks. the few that do go to santa monica.

the few bars in mar vista exist to serve the local population. there isn't more demand.

brentwood, also a lot of older people, some younger people but not as many as they'd claim there are.a nd there are plenty of bars in west la among wilshire and santa monica blvd.

3. Sassafras: New Orleans Themed. Hollywood.

6. Good Times at Davey Wayne's: '70s living room themed. Hollywood.
7. Lock N' Key. K-Town.
8. The Edison: Turn of the Century themed. Downtown.
9. Basement Tavern: Two story bar inside of a restored 1910s hotel. Santa Monica.
10. Big Foot Lodge: Colorado/lumber Jack themed. Atwater Village & Culver City.
11. Villain's: New Orleans themed. Downtown.

Essentially the city's trendy bar scene is turning into one big spread out Downtown Disney.
The worst trend with our drinking culture has been the mixology BS. Next is bars with themes. F**k themes. Give me a pint of lager or ale at a good price. When people are willing to pay $14 for some silly fruity cocktail then why should bars bother with offering something real to drink?

I think LA probably is #1 when it comes to bars offering no beer on tap. Give me a real pub. Not some neighborhood dive bar that serves cans of tecate.

Did you even bother to read the article? Demand is suppressed through over-regulation. The over-regulation stems from archaic licensing laws.

yeah, but even if bars could open unregulated , like lets say sunset blvd in the palisades, or san vicente in brentwood, they wouldnt get enough business to survive.

That argument would work if there wasn't a considerable effort made to keep bars out of the Palisades and Brentwood.

A bar in the Palisades would definitely do good business. There'd be a demand on San Vicente.

As for Mar Vista, ask yourself why Culver City has more bars, and its population is not dissimilar.

How would we know that until the regulation's lifted?

It's not comparable to, let's say, a Vallarta Supermarket or Fallas Paredes opening in the Palisades...

I just know the people in the palisades. they don't go to bars. do you think a bar would thrive in bel air? palos verdes? OK, maybe one tiny dive would survive, but there's no demand for a main street strip full of bars there.

san vicente in brentwood, well, look, there's plenty of bars a few blocks south on wilshire and santa monica. they survive but they aren't overflowing with patrons. one of them even closed a few years back (south) and nothing has taken its place.

not to mention the people who would actually go to bars in brentwood tend to live south of san vicente, and can likely walk to Q's and cabo cantina. north of san vicente is mostly families and old people. and they still have the brentwood restaurant.

Can't go to something that doesn't exist.

L.A. was a major, major center of the temperance movement in the early 20th century, and vigorously enforced Prohibition laws. There is that heritage. It is probably the birthplace of the nanny state, or at least as much as anywhere. That was true even before it became anti-business and statist in a way that would make Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro proud.
Chavez and Maduro? Not even close. More like a stale and byzantine bureaucracy.

But even worse than the bureaucracy are the NIMBY's.....from Hollywood to Brentwood
