I thought this was an interesting article, applicable to many (not just a stand-up comedian).

"... where other people's lack of struggle is in your face all the time ..."

That sounds about right.

This entire essay could be boiled down to "I like New York more than Los Angeles so I want to stay here because I'm happy now. A bunch of my friends and pupils have gone to Los Angeles and found much greater success than I've had, but some of them haven't, so I'm too scared to try. And sometimes insecurities are rough, so if I did try and ended up struggling then other people not wearing their struggles on their sleeves might make me feel bad."

I fail to see the point. You could apply this to any career in any two cities. Or even take cities and a specific career out of it. People are hesitant to take risks if their lives are comfortable and predictable. Some people are too scared to pay to take night classes in the hopes of getting that promotion because the investment of time and money might not pay off. Some people are too scared to leave their humdrum job to pursue their real passion. etc.

This guy has a middling career, his peers are passing him by, but he doesn't think it's worth it to take the risk involved with moving to Los Angeles for a while and giving it a shot.

Exactly, I never even heard of him.

That's the problem today(I blame social media) everyone thinking what they do or don't do is world news.

That's cool that dude is happy where he is at, but blaming LA for one's short comings is so cliche.

Wow you can't get a turkey sandwich at a greasy deli at 3am and take the Subway to a peep show, in LA.

You can't go surfing before work and go get some good Mexican (everywhere) in NYC.

Woop de do.

I think he probably could come up with some who actually are struggling if he thought about it more. I didn't know the comedy scene had left NY for LA, although I do know it's a big deal these days and everyone knows someone who's a comedian it seems.

It was a decent article, but nothing really to do with LA proper.

Since I'm not a transplant, I just don't get it.

It was more about the guy justifying his life in NY and how it really likes it there. And how he cares about happiness (BS or not) than making it.

And that's totally fine, but it has virtually nothing to do with LA.
