far more traffic now than 90's. metro rails & scooters and homeowners building an ADU or second story.

I thought the 90's was bad. No way would I drive from westside to SF valley back then unless it was off-peak hours. It's always peak now.
Improved areas are Hollywood, DTLA, westside, Culver City, Marina from being gentrified. Some adjacent cities are doing the same.

Exactly. It is so much bigger and more complex an economy than DC's.

Are things better or worse in your opinion? What is better and what things are worse?

Traffic is worse today but the air is cleaner. Much less violence today. In 1990, LA was dangerous--way worse than Chicago. Fewer foreigners in 1990.

And Orange Heights, Villa Park, Yorba Linda, North Tustin, or Anaheim Hills.

How can it be better now? In the good old days, people could actually break into the Entertainment Industry, buy an affordable home and actually get around.

The skyline has definitely come alive since 1990, no doubt. Whether it is better than San Francisco or Seattle at this point is debatable. Yes, LA has a taller skyline, but Seattle has become more dense.

My memories of 1990's L.A. were carjackings, shootings for being cutoff on the freeway, Rodney King and the following riots. Thankfully most of that crap is behind us. In some ways, LA seems a bit more sedate than 30 years ago. Perhaps more gentrified in some areas, and a general "live and let live" attitude that didn't exist three decades ago.

Of course, the city continues to be more diverse, and this may explain some of the "sedation" that I mentioned. When the population becomes diverse, tensions between everyone tend to be less IMO.

I remember driving on I-5 near Burbank in the early 90's and saw some drivers going 90-100 mph just for the fun of it. It was kind of a sport, I guess. Don't see much of that today. Not to say LA drivers have pacified, they still are aggressive on the freeways, and I still maintain they are the best freeway drivers in the US, thanks to the freeway culture they are used to. The light rail system has been a major change for the better.

Perhaps the biggest difference from 1990 to 2020 is the multi-cultural diversity of the city today, as I mentioned earlier. It truely is an International city today. It was in '90, but it is moreso today.

Still an important and great city in the US. Just different and constantly evolving.

And now, people instead break into your car. And housing is unaffordable and we can't get around because of people moving here from all over.
